{"id":4896,"date":"2023-09-11T13:42:03","date_gmt":"2023-09-11T11:42:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/?post_type=news&#038;p=4896"},"modified":"2024-08-09T14:01:16","modified_gmt":"2024-08-09T12:01:16","slug":"successful-first-edition-of-the-math-time","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/news\/successful-first-edition-of-the-math-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Successful first edition of the Math Time"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<p>On 4-6 September 2023 in Belval, the Department of Mathematics organised the first edition of the Math Time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 80 high-school pupils participated in this mathematical workshop, which had the objective to teach some accessible mathematics beyond what pupils are learning in school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop was divided into 3 categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"ulux-list\">\n<li class=\"ulux-list-item\">Junior category: lead by Tim Seur\u00e9 (PhD) and Kate Vokes (Postdoc), they concentrated on some entertaining maths. Pupils could explore graphs and polyhedra.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"ulux-list\">\n<li class=\"ulux-list-item\">Intermediate category: lead by number theorists Antonella Perucca (Professor) and Flavio Perissinotto (PhD), the course was on arithmetic. Participants learned, among other things, how to prove that 97 is a prime number.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"ulux-list\">\n<li class=\"ulux-list-item\">Senior category: lead by Professor R\u00f3bert Freud who participated in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 1964 and has been a trainer for mathematical competitions for 40 years, this course was on problem solving.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to its success, the next edition is planned for July 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-quote-people\">\n    <div class=\"quote-people\" role=\"group\">\n        <figure class=\"quote-people__body\">\n            <blockquote class=\"quote-people__blockquote\">\n    <span class=\"quote-people__quote\">\u201f<\/span>\n    It has been inspiring to see many pupils of different ages that are passionate about mathematics.
