Cancer research in the Department of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (DHML) has received an encouraging new boost through a three-year pledge from Fifty-One Club \u00c9islek, who will contribute \u20ac30,000 to the University\u2019s recently established Cancer Research Fund<\/a>. The commitment reflects the Club\u2019s dedication to supporting research efforts that deepen our understanding of cancer and contribute to the development of innovative therapeutic approaches. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pledge builds on an ongoing relationship between Fifty-One Club \u00c9islek and the DHML. The Club first supported cancer research at the University in 2018 by contributing \u20ac25,000 to the Molecular Disease Mechanisms<\/a> research group, which investigates the molecular basis of colorectal cancer and its resistance to therapies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the international Fifty-One movement\u2014which promotes friendship, responsibility, and social engagement through support for initiatives in education, health, and social services\u2014the \u00c9islek Club\u2019s support for cancer research reflects its commitment to activities with long-term societal impact. Their renewed engagement advances fundamental insights and translational approaches in cancer research — efforts that may ultimately enable earlier detection, more refined treatment strategies and improved patient outcomes. <\/p>\n\n\n

In 2025, the University introduced a series of thematic funds designed to broaden opportunities for philanthropic participation. These funds grow through contributions of all sizes, enabling supporters to participate at a level that suits them. As gifts accumulate, they create a meaningful pool of resources that can be directed toward key research priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cancer Research Fund supports targeted measures that help researchers advance promising work and complete ongoing projects. Donations can be used for proof-of-concept studies generating preliminary data for competitive research proposals, short contract extensions for research personnel finalising scientific outputs, short-term technical exchanges to acquire specialised expertise, and the acquisition of small research equipment essential for experimental work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donors who commit to sustained, multi-year support are recognised as Champions, acknowledging the stabilising role such contributions play in the University\u2019s long-term research ambitions. With its new pledge, Fifty-One Club \u00c9islek becomes the first-ever Champion for the Cancer Research Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
