What many don\u2019t realise is that this lake provides&nbsp;around 45% of Luxembourg\u2019s drinking water. It powers a hydroelectric station, supports tourism and fish farms, and is one of the country\u2019s most important natural assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as populations grow and new types of contaminants\u2014from pharmaceuticals to industrial chemicals\u2014find their way into rivers, the lake faces increasing pressure. Protecting it has become both a scientific and political priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/research-projects\/qualisure\/\">QualiS\u00fbre<\/a> comes in. Launched in 2024 as a three-year INTERREG project, it unites researchers, public administrations and water operators from&nbsp;Luxembourg, Wallonia and Rhein-Palatinate&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;to create a long-term plan to preserve the lake\u2019s water quality. At the University of Luxembourg, Dr.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/people\/silvia-venditti\/\">Silvia Venditti<\/a>, leads the work on nature-based solutions, an approach that uses soil, plants and microorganisms to naturally remove&nbsp;contaminants&nbsp;and preserve the lake for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-spacer is-spacer-size-sm\"><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"from-emisure-to-qualisure\"\n    >\nFrom Emis\u00fbre to Qualis\u00fbre<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The EmiS\u00fbre project (2017\u20132021) was one of the first in Europe to test nature-based solutions for removing pesticides and pharmaceuticals from&nbsp;wastewater treatment plant effluent. It generated essential knowledge, models and practical experience that QualiS\u00fbre now directly reuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-quote-people\">\n    <div class=\"quote-people\" role=\"group\">\n        <figure class=\"quote-people__body\">\n            <blockquote class=\"quote-people__blockquote\">\n    <span class=\"quote-people__quote\">\u201f<\/span>\n    With EmiS\u00fbre, we were planting the seeds. This broader approach is necessary because the lake is fed by tributaries with origins well beyond Luxembourg\u2019s borders, as two-thirds of the catchment lie in Wallonia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If emissions from upstream in Belgium aren\u2019t addressed, local actions downstream won\u2019t be enough. This makes the basin an ideal \u201cliving laboratory\u201d for testing how to monitor, treat and prevent micropollutants in a shared, cross-border ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The area also brings together all the challenges modern water management must deal with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"ulux-list\">\n<li class=\"ulux-list-item\">micropollutants from daily life (pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, additives),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"ulux-list-item\">nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus that can cause summer blooms,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"ulux-list-item\">microorganisms relevant for potential agricultural reuse,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"ulux-list-item\">and ageing infrastructure struggling with heavier rain events.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Protecting the lake means working across borders, systems and disciplines; precisely what QualiS\u00fbre is designed to do.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-spacer is-spacer-size-sm\"><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"nature-based-solutions-the-role-of-soils-and-plants\"\n    >\nNature-based solutions: the role of soils and plants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before designing solutions, the team identifies \u201cemission hotspots\u201d: places where pollution has the greatest impact. These often include wastewater treatment plants and combined sewer overflows that release untreated water during heavy rain&nbsp;events. Uni.lu and its partners analyse these sites to understand where additional treatment\u2014or new nature-based infrastructure\u2014would bring the most benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once researchers identify hotspots, they can test nature-based solutions in these areas. QualiS\u00fbre introduces a central innovation: locally produced soil filters. Water trickles through layers of soil and plants, and microorganisms living in the soil and roots filter, retain or biodegrade contaminants. \u2018<em>\u2019Using local materials reduces transport impacts and aligns with INTERREG\u2019s sustainability goals<\/em>,\u2019\u2019 explains Silvia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After laboratory tests using synthetic contaminated water, Silvia and her team selected the most promising materials. Teams are now constructing six pilot filters\u2014three in Luxembourg and three in Wallonia\u2014for one year of real-life testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-quote-people\">\n    <div class=\"quote-people\" role=\"group\">\n        <figure class=\"quote-people__body\">\n            <blockquote class=\"quote-people__blockquote\">\n    <span class=\"quote-people__quote\">\u201f<\/span>\n    It&#8217;s not easy to imagine that a plant can be the treatment. But sometimes, the most effective solutions are the ones nature already offers.\u201d\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-wrapper quote-people__figcaption\">\n<p class=\"quote-people__author wp-block-unilux-blocks-plain-text\">Dr. Silvia Venditti <\/p><\/div>\n        <\/figure>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-spacer is-spacer-size-sm\"><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"an-intelligent-tool-for-water-operators\"\n    >\nAn intelligent tool for water operators<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To manage overflows and treatment capacity, QualiS\u00fbre is also developing an AI-powered decision-support tool. Designed by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtc4water.com\/index.php?lang=en\">RTC4Water<\/a>, it will help operators decide whether excess water should be diverted to natural filters, stored, or sent to treatment plants that still have capacity. Researchers are already running simulations, and they will refine the tool once pilot results arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the project\u2019s end, QualiS\u00fbre aims to deliver the first joint cross-border Master Plan to protect the S\u00fbre Lake\u2014a strategic tool co-developed with administrations from both countries. The filters, models and monitoring methods developed here can serve as examples for other European regions facing similar challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For communities, the benefits are concrete: cleaner water, more resilient systems, and greater transparency in how water is protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Silvia, the motivation is both scientific and personal.
