{"id":40273,"date":"2025-07-07T09:13:17","date_gmt":"2025-07-07T07:13:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/?post_type=news&#038;p=40273"},"modified":"2025-07-07T09:41:50","modified_gmt":"2025-07-07T07:41:50","slug":"cracking-the-code-of-ai-researchers-at-uni-lu-demystify-neural-networks","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/news\/cracking-the-code-of-ai-researchers-at-uni-lu-demystify-neural-networks\/","title":{"rendered":"Cracking the code of AI: Researchers at Uni.lu demystify Neural Networks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<p>In a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, a team of mathematicians at the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine has made a remarkable leap forward in understanding how neural networks \u2014 the engines behind technologies like ChatGPT \u2014 really work.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-spacer is-spacer-size-md\"><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"new-insights-into-ais-brain\"\n    >\nNew insights into AI&#8217;s brain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Led by Professors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/people\/ivan-nourdin\/\">Ivan Nourdin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/people\/giovanni-peccati\/\">Giovanni Peccati<\/a>, and in collaboration with experts from Italy and the United States, the team conducted a <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00440-025-01360-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new study<\/a> that provides fresh insights into deep neural networks. Specifically, these complex, layered systems are inspired by the way the human brain processes information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why does this matter? Neural networks are notoriously difficult to analyse. Made of thousands, sometimes millions, of interconnected nodes, their behaviour can seem almost magical. But the Luxembourg-led team has shown that, under certain conditions, these networks behave in surprisingly predictable ways. Using advanced mathematical tools, they\u2019ve proven that as neural networks grow larger, their behaviour becomes arbitrarily close \u2014 in a precise, quantifiable sense \u2014 to that of a well-known statistical model. This model is the Gaussian process, an ubiquitous random object driven by what many of us might recognise as the classic \u201cbell curve\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-spacer is-spacer-size-sm\"><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"from-mathematical-theory-to-real-world-impact\"\n    >\nFrom mathematical theory to real-world impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This might sound abstract, but the implications are profound. By understanding how neural networks behave at large scales, researchers and engineers can design smarter, more reliable AI systems. It\u2019s a bit like discovering the blueprint behind a black box. Suddenly, we can see how the parts fit together and predict how the system will respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project is more than just a theoretical exercise. It\u2019s already inspiring new research and helping train the next generation of AI experts. It\u2019s also sparking conversations across fields like computer science, engineering, economics, and ethics.
