{"id":38860,"date":"2025-05-19T06:53:38","date_gmt":"2025-05-19T04:53:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/?post_type=news&#038;p=38860"},"modified":"2025-06-03T16:48:21","modified_gmt":"2025-06-03T14:48:21","slug":"nobel-prize-winner-inspires-young-minds","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/news\/nobel-prize-winner-inspires-young-minds\/","title":{"rendered":"Nobel Prize winner inspires young minds\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<p>It\u2019s not every day that high school and university students get to ask questions to a <strong>Nobel Prize laureate<\/strong>\u2014let alone witness a physics demonstration that ends in a loud, crowd-startling explosion.&nbsp;But that\u2019s exactly what happened at Tramsschapp in Limpertsberg, where around 300 people, including 60 students from high school, bachelor, and master programmes, gathered for a public talk by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/physics\/1997\/phillips\/facts\/\">Prof. William D. Phillips<\/a>, winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics. The event marked the closing of the first day of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/conferences\/physics-for-future\/\">Physics for Future conference<\/a>, and brought together researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and the curious public under one roof.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour mother was right\u2014you should never place a closed container in the oven!\u201d Prof. Phillips joked, just after a bottle filled with liquid nitrogen burst open with a thunderous bang. The audience\u2014already captivated by his animated, laughter-filled performance\u2014burst into applause and laughter.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-quote-people\">\n    <div class=\"quote-people\" role=\"group\">\n        <figure class=\"quote-people__body\">\n            <blockquote class=\"quote-people__blockquote\">\n    <span class=\"quote-people__quote\">\u201f<\/span>\n    Kids, naturally, are curious about the way things work. And somehow, as people grow up, most of the people lose that curiosity. But you know what? There is a certain class of people who don&#8217;t lose that curiosity. Through dramatic demonstrations involving carnations frozen and shattered like glass, rubber balls that turned brittle, and the powerful blast of a nitrogen explosion, Prof. Phillips illustrated the strange and<strong> fascinating behaviour of matter at extremely low temperatures<\/strong>. He explained how he and his team used lasers to cool atoms to near absolute zero\u2014research that earned him the Nobel Prize nearly three decades ago.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The evening wasn\u2019t just entertaining\u2014<strong>it was inspiring<\/strong>. Students posed questions during the Q&amp;A and after the talk, curious about quantum mechanics, temperature extremes, and the future of physics research. Also present was Luxembourg\u2019s Minister of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity, <a href=\"https:\/\/gouvernement.lu\/en\/gouvernement\/serge-wilmes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Serge Wilmes<\/a>, who attended the talk alongside researchers and science leaders from across Europe. In parallel, <a href=\"https:\/\/gouvernement.lu\/en\/gouvernement\/stephanie-obertin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">St\u00e9phanie Obertin<\/a>, Minister for Research and Higher Education, had an in-depth discussion with William D.
