These are obtained by combining molecules that have both a \u2018water-loving\u2019 and a \u2018water-hating\u2019\u00a0part, which causes them to form specific accumulations under certain conditions. The colors in the image reveal how the molecular orientations of the droplets self-organize as they dry. Anupam Sengupta and team captured the image using a microscope that polarises light (source: FNR).<\/p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-dev4-reusable-blocks-image  object-fit--contain\">\n    \n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-block-image unilux-custom-image-block\"\n                alt=\"\"\n            src=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/07\/2_tabibi_sajad_ul_scientist_antarctica_2048x1536.jpg\"\n                    style=\"object-position: 50.00% 50.00%; font-family: &quot;object-fit: contain; object-position: 50.00% 50.00%;&quot;; aspect-ratio: 4\/3; object-fit: contain; width: 100%;\"\n        loading=\"lazy\"\n\/>    <\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Luxembourg researchers in Antarctica&#8221; by <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/research\/fstm\/doe\/members\/sajad_tabibi\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Sajad Tabibi<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnr.lu\/research-with-impact-fnr-highlight\/fnr-science-image-competition-antarctica\/?utm_source=Main&amp;utm_medium=Sci&amp;utm_campaign=Antarctica\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Won the &#8220;Scientists in Action&#8221; category<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<p>This picture represents scientists from the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/research\/fstm\/doe\/research_areas\/geophysics\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Geophysics Laboratory<\/a> (GL) of the University of Luxembourg in such a harsh environment in Antarctica that it resembles the surface of the\u00a0Moon. The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) visible on the right corner of the picture is located at the former Japanese station \u201cAsuka\u201d, around 60 km from the Belgian station. They are useful in just as many different ways \u2013 from LCD screens, make-up and mood rings, to functions in the human body just to name a few.\u00a0This image that resembles a funky maze in fact shows chiral textures formed by liquid crystals.
