The event also featured an enjoyable evening with live music from our Master students, PhDs candidates and postdocs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chaired by the head and deputy head of the department,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/people\/alexandre-tkatchenko\/\"> Prof. Alexandre Tkatchenko <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/people\/andreas-michels\/\">Prof. Andreas Michels<\/a>, the workshop welcomed more than 150 participants, including collaborators from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.list.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology<\/a> (LIST). This marked a pivotal moment in the department\u2019s calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"recent-contributions-to-the-departments-topical-clusters\"\n    >\nRecent contributions to the department&#8217;s topical clusters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The scientific programme included department research talks, featuring five selected presentations that showcased significant recent contributions to DPhyMS\u2019s topical clusters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"ulux-list\">\n<li class=\"ulux-list-item\"><strong>Soft and Living Matter Cluster<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMicrobes in porous environments: from active interactions to emergent feedback \u201c, Biophysical Reviews (2024), by Dr. Chenyu JIN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"ulux-list\">\n<li class=\"ulux-list-item\"><strong>Photovoltaics &amp; Sustainable Energy Cluster<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnderstanding and decoupling the role of wavelength and defects in light-induced degradation of metal-halide perovskites\u201d, Energy &amp; Environmental Science (2024), by Dr. Jeremy HIEULLE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"ulux-list\">\n<li class=\"ulux-list-item\"><strong>Spectroscopy &amp; Functional Materials Cluster<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSub-8-fs pulses in the visible to near-infrared by a degenerate optical parametric amplifier\u201d, Optics Letters (2023), by Dr. Thomas DECKERT<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"ulux-list\">\n<li class=\"ulux-list-item\"><strong>Statistical Physics &amp; Machine Learning Cluster<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStochastic Operator Variance: An Observable to Diagnose Noise and Scrambling\u201d, Physical Review Letters (2023),&nbsp; by Pablo MARTINEZ-AZCONA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"ulux-list\">\n<li class=\"ulux-list-item\"><strong>Quantum Science &amp; Technology Cluster<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p>\u201cNonideal Reaction-Diffusion Systems: Multiple Routes to Instability\u201d, Physical Review Letters (2023), by Dr. Timur ASLYAMOV.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p>\u201cSecond quantization of many-body dispersion interactions for chemical and biological systems\u201d, Nature Communications (2023), by Dr. Matteo GORI.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Each talk demonstrated significant advances in their respective fields and showcased the department&#8217;s commitment to bridging theoretical and experimental work, with contributions ranging from biophysical dynamics to new applications of machine learning in statistical physics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"highlighting-pioneering-research-and-innovation-in-physics-and-materials-science\"\n    >\nHighlighting pioneering research and innovation in Physics and Materials Science<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A standout moment of the day was the keynote presentation by External Guest Speaker, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oeaw.ac.at\/esq\/home\/esq-faculty\/joachim-burgdoerfer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prof. Joachim Burgd\u00f6rfer <\/a>from the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the Vienna University of Technology. As he took the stage to present \u201cAttosecond Chronoscopy: From Atoms to Condensed Matter,\u201d he offered fascinating insights into his pioneering work in ultrafast physics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later in the day, the focus shifted to a different yet equally compelling subject. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/en\/people\/christian-wagner\/\">Prof. Christian Wagner<\/a>, professor at the Universit\u00e4t des Saarlandes and Honorary Professor at DPhyMS, entitled <em>\u201cThe physics of blood flow.\u201d<\/em> His presentation provided a deep dive into fluid dynamics, vessel mechanics, and the unique properties of blood, offering valuable perspectives for both life sciences and physics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the poster session allowed researchers to showcase their group activities to colleagues, fostering even more interaction and knowledge-sharing. The Scienteens Lab also contributed to the day\u2019s dynamic atmosphere, offering an Energy Balance workshop that engaged attendees with hands-on activities. The workshop proceeded with an award ceremony recognising the best oral presentations. This moment served to foster a sense of unity and collaboration, reinforcing the importance of community among the physicists in Luxembourg and creating new opportunities for connection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To the sounds of live music from our students, the day concluded with a networking reception, where attendees engaged in meaningful conversations that promoted collaboration and strengthened connections within the Physics and Materials Science community.
