The sixth edition of the Mathematical Careers Day took place on 11 October 2024 with more than 90 participants on Belval Campus. It was a great opportunity for current students to get an idea of the variety of jobs and exchange with alumni and potential recruiters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moderated by a well-known presenter Lisa Burke<\/a>, the round table gathered five participants who studied mathematics and work now in different fields, namely Giuseppe Bonavolont\u00e0<\/a>, Senior Head of Credit, Capital and ALM Model Validation Unit at the European Investment Bank; Agnese Gini<\/a>, R&D specialist at AbstractionsLab; Michael Mbajwa<\/a>, Data Software Engineer at Circu Li-ion; Philippe Schram<\/a>, Coordinator Process and Digitalisation at the Ministry of Home Affairs, and Chlo\u00e9 Zhu<\/a>, Risk Manager at Invesco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The alumni exchanged about their passion and choice to study mathematics, how they managed to find their first internships and\/or jobs and gave their advice to the audience. More specifically, Michael and Chlo\u00e9 shared their experience as non-EU citizens who have succeeded in finding very interesting jobs in Luxembourg while Giuseppe and Philippe explained the criteria to enter European and national institutions. In parallel, Agnese focused on her choice to do a PhD and continue doing research within her job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lot of questions were raised by the public about finding internships, the attractivity of mathematics degrees, the importance to pursue a PhD, the recommendations for a good CV, to name a few. In addition, Romain Raux<\/a>, Project Manager at the Career Centre, and Andy Adams<\/a>, Alumni Relations Specialist, presented the different services offered to students and alumni. Nathaniel Sagman<\/a>, Postdoctoral researcher highlighted the importance of ethics. To conclude the event, Christophe Ley<\/a>, Associate professor in Mathematics, introduced the other alumni present in the room to allow students to make the most of the networking part of the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was organised by Professor Gabor Wiese<\/a> together with Postdoctoral Researcher Felix Baril Boudreau<\/a>, Doctoral Researcher Thilo Bauman<\/a> and Administrative Assistant Marie Leblanc<\/a>. \u201cThe number of participants was the highest ever and people stayed long at the reception. Judging from the feedback received so far, our students and alumni liked the event.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next edition is already planned on 10 October 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
