Held on Belval Campus, the event was punctuated by many activities, games and discussions, a great occasion to celebrate the International Women in Mathematics Day!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the day, secondary school girls had the opportunity to participate in the workshop \u201cUnpuzzling Mathematics\u201d, act in the play \u201cCod\u00e9e\u201d, join the infinity flashmob and exchange with mathematicians on their career paths and current jobs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"having-fun\"\n    >\nHaving fun\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop \u201cUnpuzzling Mathematics\u201d was moderated by students, PhD candidates and postdocs in mathematics from the University of Luxembourg. During the workshop, participants could enjoy original facets of mathematics through games and specially designed interactive tools.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/recherche\/fhse\/lucet\/people2\/ann_kiefer\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Ann Kiefer<\/a>, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Luxembourg, captured the audience\u2019s attention. After a general presentation about a long standing open problem, Ann invited girls to take part in a live quiz, answering questions such as \u201cwhat mathematics means to you?\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This edition was also enriched with a flash mob during which the 230 high-school participants drew the infinite symbol!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"raising-awareness\"\n    >\nRaising awareness\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The play \u201cCod\u00e9e\u201d from the compagnie LAPS \/ \u00c9quipe du matin, which focuses on the persistent gender inequalities throughout mathematics and science, raised many questions from the audience. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, four women who studied mathematics, namely Federica Fanoni, Chlo\u00e9 Koos, Marie Lejeune, Monika Zlopasa, shared their testimonials and encouraged girls to pursue math studies. They showed the large variety of jobs possible after studying mathematics. Federica is researcher at CNRS, Chlo\u00e9 is Head of Productivity Platform at the Pictet Group, Marie is Software Engineer at&nbsp;Acsone and Monika is an Investment Risk Manager at UBS Fund Management Luxembourg. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"growing-interest\"\n    >\nGrowing interest\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of participants doubled compared to last year, which shows the increasing interest of this initiative launched in 2019 by mathematicians <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstm\/dmath\/people\/hugo_parlier\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Hugo Parlier<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstm\/dmath\/people\/bruno_teheux\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bruno Teheux<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/fstm\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine\" rel=\"noopener\">Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine<\/a> of the University of Luxembourg. \u201c<i>We\u2019re a bit overwhelmed but super happy that so many students showed up.
