{"id":37474,"date":"2025-04-07T13:13:34","date_gmt":"2025-04-07T11:13:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/?post_type=events&#038;p=37474"},"modified":"2025-05-20T13:46:47","modified_gmt":"2025-05-20T11:46:47","slug":"inaugural-lecture-prof-marko-rancic-how-quantum-and-supercomputers-work-in-synergy-to-solve-problems-of-the-future","status":"publish","type":"events","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/events\/inaugural-lecture-prof-marko-rancic-how-quantum-and-supercomputers-work-in-synergy-to-solve-problems-of-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Inaugural lecture Prof. Marko Rancic: How quantum and supercomputers work in synergy to solve problems of the future"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<p>The inaugural lecture of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fstm-en\/people\/marko-rancic\/\">Prof. Marko Rancic<\/a> entitled &#8220;How quantum and supercomputers work in synergy to solve problems of the future&#8221; will take place on 18 June on Belval campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Presentation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this lecture Prof. Marko Rancic will give a popular introduction to quantum computing. He will introduce basic concepts which allow quantum computers to work faster than their classical counterparts (entanglement and superposition). An overview will be given in two basic types of quantum computing algorithms: hybrid classical-quantum algorithms and universal quantum algorithms. Special attention will be paid to quantum-centric-supercomputing, an emerging paradigm in which quantum computers are coupled to supercomputers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Biography<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. Marko Rancic studied at the University of Ni\u0161, Serbia where he obtained his BSc (2010) and MSc (2012) degrees. His path took him to Germany where he spent 4 years at the University of Konstanz under the guidance of Prof. Burkard, investigating semiconducting quantum computer hardware (2013-2016). The next stop in his career was the university of Basel in Switzerland where he worked in the group of King Faisal prize winner Prof. Loss and studied different semiconducting architectures for quantum computing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019 he made a career change and accepted an industrial PI\/manager role in R&amp;D of TotalEnergies \u2013 one of the biggest companies in the world (5 largest in Europe in revenue and largest in France). On top of going from academia to industry, he also changed research disciplines from more physics-oriented modelling of quantum computing hardware to developing algorithms and software for solving practical use cases on quantum computers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In November 2023, he came back to academia and accepted an assistant professor position at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.
