Students who have completed their secondary education in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg may be waived from language certificates in the following cases:
(Please note that only secondary education will be considered; we cannot accept school years spent in primary school, etc.)
- They have completed classical secondary education, with 5 years of instruction in both French and German. A certificate in English will not be required, as this diploma provides a B2 level in English.
- They have completed general secondary education, with 5 years of instruction in both French and German. A certificate in English will not be required, as this diploma provides a B2 level in English.
- Students who have completed their secondary education in European education (Schola Europaea), with French and German as L1 and L2 (no preference on the order of L1 and L2 mentioned), are exempt from language certificates in French and German.
Students who have completed their secondary education in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in the following streams must provide a language certificate for one or more languages of instruction:
- International Baccalaureate: a certificate in German at B2 level must be provided, except in exceptional cases.
- IGCSE, AS-levels, and A-levels: a certificate in French and German at B2 level must be provided.
Students with an Abibac diploma are exempt from language certificates due to the bilingual nature of their programme. A certificate in English will not be required, as this diploma provides a B2 level in English.
Any other candidate who has completed their secondary education in Europe, in a third country, or who does not meet the profiles mentioned above must provide a language certificate for any language other than the primary language of instruction of the secondary school diploma obtained (please note that a bilingual programme not mentioned above cannot be accepted).
Example: a student who completed their studies in France and holds a general Baccalaureate will not need to provide a certificate for French. However, they will need to provide a certificate in German.
Please note that these language levels must be certified at the time of your admission, before the application deadlines. It is not possible to submit language certificates later. We recommend obtaining your language certificates before applying to the University of Luxembourg.
Candidates with a B1 level in German may still be admitted. During their studies, they will be required to reach a B2 level in German to graduate. Intensive German language courses (3 weeks of intensive lessons, exercises to complete and submit, and an exam at the end of the semester) are provided to help them reach the required B2 level.
