Prof Gabor WIESE

Gabor Wiese is a full Professor in Mathematics at the University of Luxembourg and Head of the Number Theory and Arithmetic Geometry research group. He has been the Director of the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Applications from its start, and he is additionally the Study Programme Director of the Master in Mathematics and the Deputy Study Programme Director of the Master in Secondary Education – Mathematics. He is further one of the founders and long-term and current responsible for the Experimental Mathematics Lab.

Gabor Wiese works in Number Theory and Arithmetic Geometry. His methods are mostly algebraic and his approaches are often explicit and computational. A popular way of describing his research is as the mathematics grown out of the tools proving Fermat’s Last Theorem. Recently, Gabor Wiese also started to work on questions from cryptography. He held several grants from the FNR, among them two INTER grants, one with the German DFG and one with the French ANR. Gabor Wiese is very active in PhD training, having successfully supervised 8 PhD candidates at the University of Luxembourg. He was also the coordinator of the first FNR PRIDE grant in mathematics and has been involved in many others.

Gabor Wiese teaches mostly algebra and number theory courses at all levels. He puts much efforts into the Experimental Mathematics Lab, which he co-founded and steers. It provides research-type experience to students from their 2nd semester onwards. He is also the initiator and main organiser of the yearly Mathematical Careers Days.

Gabor Wiese was a driver in the inclusion of mathematics into the Scienteens Lab and co-developed the first three mathematics workshops.

Gabor Wiese received the Teaching Award 2021.

Before joining the University of Luxembourg in 2011, Gabor Wiese was a Junior professor at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Gabor Wiese studied mathematics at the Universities of Heidelberg and Cambridge. After one year at the University of Rennes 1, he moved to the University of Leiden, where he obtained his doctorate in 2005.
