Assoc. Prof Francesco VITI

Francesco Viti is Associate Professor in Engineering science traffic planning and management transportation engineering at the University of Luxembourg. He leads the MobiLab Transport Research Group within the Department of Engineering. He is currently the Head of the Department of Engineering.

Francesco’s research activities range from mobility and travel behaviour analysis and modelling, network modelling and control, optimization and data science, Artificial Intelligence and development of decision support systems, Current projects he coordinates include public transport electrification and optimisation, multimodal design and planning, on-demand service management, transport and logistics services, and big data analytics. He is author of over 300 journal and conference papers, reviewer of top journals in the transportation domain, and Associate Editor of the Journal of ITS, Transportation Research Part C, and the Journal of Data Science for Transportation.

Francesco contributed to education at bachelor and master levels. He is course coordinator of Traffic Infrastructure Design within the Bachelor of Engineering, Transport Systems Analysis: Theory and Practice at the Master of Civil Engineering, and Logistics Management at the Master of Logistics and Supply Chain Management. He also offers his classes to the Masters of Sustainable Development in collaboration with the University of Liege, and the Masters of Architecture and Spatial Planning at the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities.

Francesco engages in different outreach activities, including providing training and co-creation workshops for companies and municipalities, consultancy and expert advices, and participates to public talks. He acts as expert for the European Commission and for the Luxembourgish Ministries of Mobility and Public Works and of Economy, participates in expert groups for European institutions like the EIT Urban Mobility and the European Investment Bank, and the Italian Ministry of research and for many international funding agencies.

Before joining th University of Luxembourg, Francesco worked for TU Delft and KU Leuven. Since end of 2022 he is also Visiting Professor at the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS) at the University of Sydney, Australia.

Francesco holds a MSc in Civil Engineering, majoring Transportation Engineering from the University of Naples “Federico II” and a PhD in Transport Planning from TU Delft. He is also certified UK Higher Education Fellow since 2016.
