The\u00a0bi-national\u00a0competition\u00a0was organised by the German Space Agency (DLR), the Luxembourg Space Agency (LSA), the Deutsche\u00a0Physikalische\u00a0Gesellschaft (PDG), and Yuri GmbH.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"brain-organoids-on-the-iss\"\n    >\nBrain organoids\u00a0on the ISS\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/lcsb\/people\/elisa_zuccoli\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Elisa\u00a0Zuccoli<\/a>, a Ph.D.\u00a0candidate from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/lcsb\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB)<\/a>\u00a0and BRAINS team leader,\u00a0is very excited\u00a0\u201cWe are extremely happy to\u00a0have\u00a0the opportunity to investigate the growth of our 3D cell cultures in space.\u00a0Microgravity\u00a0provides a more accurate\u00a0scenario\u00a0than on-ground, it\u00a0mimics\u00a0the free-floating state during embryonic development\u00a0resulting in a more physiologically\u00a0relevant organisation.\u201d\u00a0Despite the fact that\u00a0objects float and appear to be weightless\u00a0in low Earth orbit, gravity is not zero but very small\u00a0(microgravity).\u00a03D cell culture systems, so-called organoids, have a wide variety of applications in disease\u00a0modeling\u00a0(e.g. midbrain organoids are used to model Parkinson\u2019s disease) and drug screening.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cThe growth of the brain organoids\u00a0under microgravity has an immense potential impact on the future pharma industry and regenerative medicine.\u201d\u00a0Explains\u00a0<a href=\"\/64287\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof. Jens\u00a0Schwamborn<\/a>,\u00a0head of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/lcsb\/research\/developmental_and_cellular_biology\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Developmental and Cellular Biology\u00a0group<\/a>\u00a0at the LCSB\u00a0and\u00a0co-supervisor of the BRAINS team.\u00a0Brain organoids are miniaturised and simplified versions of the brain showing realistic micro-anatomy but produced in\u00a0the lab.\u00a0Spatial organisation and cell population diversity are typically limited to 2-3 mm in diameter on-ground, but midbrain organoids could grow up to larger sizes (< 5 mm diameter) in space.\u00a0\u201cThe findings of this experiment\u00a0can\u00a0provide an essential foundation in neuroscience and cell culture\u00a0techniques, showing the behaviour of brain cells in space.\u201d\u00a0Prof.\u00a0Schwamborn\u00a0adds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"joined-forces-of-an-interdisciplinary-team\"\n    >\nJoined forces of an\u00a0interdisciplinary team<\/h3>\n<p>The team consists of fellow\u00a0Ph.D.\u00a0candidate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/snt\/people\/jose_ignacio_delgado_centeno\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Jos\u00e9 Ignacio\u00a0Delgado\u00a0Centeno<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0three Master students, Daniela Vega Guti\u00e9rrez (Master programme\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/formations\/fstm\/master_in_integrated_systems_biology\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Integrated Systems Biology<\/a>),\u00a0Aelyn\u00a0Chong Castro\u00a0and\u00a0Lina Mar\u00eda Amaya\u00a0Mej\u00eda\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/formations\/fstm\/interdisciplinary_space_master\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Interdisciplinary Space Master<\/a>).\u00a0Together they\u00a0intend\u00a0to\u00a0investigate\u00a0if the brain organoids will be less densely packed,\u00a0and if they can grow larger than in standard\u00a0gravity\u00a0conditions. The team will use artificial intelligence for image analysis to compare their findings to current experiments performed on\u00a0the\u00a0ground.\u00a0The team will be invited\u00a0to witness\u00a0the launch of the rocket\u00a0that will carry their experiment to the ISS\u00a0(most likely from a launch facility in the USA during the\u00a0fourth quarter of\u00a02022 or\u00a0the\u00a0first quarter of\u00a02023).\u00a0<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/snt\/people\/miguel_angel_olivares_mendez\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof. Miguel Angel Olivares Mendez<\/a>,\u00a0head of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/snt\/research\/spacer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Space Robotics\u00a0(SpaceR)\u00a0group<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) and\u00a0co-supervisor of the BRAINS team,\u00a0explains\u00a0the importance of space research:\u00a0\u201cThese\u00a0types\u00a0of\u00a0experiments,\u00a0and\u00a0any other activity in space,\u00a0demand an increment of autonomy to reduce human interaction. Therefore, the use of artificial intelligence and a higher level of autonomy will be one of the disrupting technologies in the new space era. In BRAINS,\u00a0we will implement an autonomous system that could operate the experiment without human intervention\u201d.\u00a0<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/snt\/people\/carol_martinez_luna\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Carol Martinez Luna<\/a>,\u00a0research\u00a0scientist in\u00a0SnT\u2019s\u00a0SpaceR\u00a0research group\u00a0and co-supervisor of the BRAINS team,\u00a0comments on\u00a0the\u00a0role\u00a0of\u00a0machine\u00a0learning\u00a0within\u00a0the BRAINS project:\u00a0\u201cAs in\u00a0Earth applications, machine learning-based approaches generate outstanding outcomes for facial\u00a0recognition, object detection, and even autonomous driving.
