The University of Luxembourg joins forces today to support a new concept called <i>\u201cFood4Future\u201d<\/i> launched by Restopolis, the department of the Ministry of National Education, Children and Youth in charge of collective catering in school and university canteens.<\/p><p><i>\u201cFood4Future\u201d<\/i>\u00a0aims to change eating habits, reduce the impact on the environment and slow down climate change. Six objectives have been defined as its driving power: new meal offer, purchases in short circuits, waste prevention, fight against food waste, raising awareness of sustainable food and implementation of the action plan PAN-BIO2025.<\/p><p>To support the initiative, the University is committed to educate its community to develop sustainable buying and eating habits. Through available reports, research-based information and interviews with its researchers, the University will provide useful information to its staff and students in line with the objectives of \u201cFood4Future\u201d.<\/p><p>Buying local, buying seasonal\u00a0<\/p><p>During the thematic week from 6 &#8211; 10 December, the initiative will focus on the importance of buying local and seasonal food.\u00a0Buying local and seasonal has many advantages:<\/p><ul class=\"ulux-list\"><li class=\"ulux-list-item\">Fresher produce for the consumer: as it spends less time getting to the supermarket, produce has time to grow to its maturity, and as a result\u00a0contains more nutrients.<\/li><li class=\"ulux-list-item\">More energy-efficient: Less energy is spent\u00a0for transporting food, generating less pollution and carbon emissions<\/li><li class=\"ulux-list-item\">Less packaging:\u00a0less need to protect products during transport, and vegetables or fruit can be bought in batches.<\/li><li class=\"ulux-list-item\">Fairer pricing: compared to mass distribution channels, relationships and negotiations are more transparent, as a result producers may receive fairer pricing.<\/li><li class=\"ulux-list-item\">Sync with the seasons:\u00a0Farmers can only grow what the season will support.\u00a0Foods that are grown and consumed during their appropriate seasons are more nutritionally dense.\u00a0Sicona Luxembourg, the nature conservation syndicate, has published a list of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/content\/download\/140508\/1598546\/version\/1\/file\/Uebst_Kalenner_fr_grouss.pdf\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">seasonal fruit<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/content\/download\/140507\/1598542\/version\/1\/file\/Gemeis_Kalenner_fr_grouss.pdf\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">vegetables<\/a>\u00a0suitable in our regions.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"meet-food4future\"\n    >\nMeet Food4Future<\/h3>\n<p>To present the Food4Future concept and its topics to University staff and students, Restopolis will have an information stand at Food House on Friday, 10 December.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Additional resources<\/p><p>1.\u00a0 \u00a0 Research project Sustainable food practices by Dr Rachel Reckinger,\u00a0Research Scientist at FHSE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/food.uni.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">food.uni.lu<\/a><\/p><p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dr Rachel\u00a0Reckinger, Research Scientist at the\u00a0Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, speaking at TEDx UniversityofLuxembourg2020:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/food.uni.lu\/whats-up\/public-outreach\/tedxuniversityofluxembourg\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00ab\u00a0How to design a truly sustainable food system in the context of climate change?\u00a0\u00bb<\/a><\/p><p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aroma-interreg.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Interreg Aroma<\/a>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0\u201cApprovisionnement R\u00e9gional Organis\u00e9 pour une Meilleure Alimentation,\u00a0the projects aims to create an operational supply organisation covering the territory of the Greater Region<\/p><p>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<i>Lancet<\/i>\u00a0is the first full scientific review of what\u00a0constitutes a healthy diet from a sustainable perspective, and\u00a0which actions can support and speed up food system transformation.
