{"id":1580,"date":"2021-11-30T15:04:24","date_gmt":"2021-11-30T15:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/website.prod.unilu.spikeseed.cloud\/fr\/news\/the-sound-of-change-the-history-of-free-radio-stations\/"},"modified":"2021-11-30T15:04:24","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T15:04:24","slug":"the-sound-of-change-the-history-of-free-radio-stations","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fr\/news\/the-sound-of-change-the-history-of-free-radio-stations\/","title":{"rendered":"The sound of change: The history of free radio stations"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\"><p>Vitus Sproten receives an Excellent Thesis Award in Humanities for his PhD research.<\/p><p><strong>Excellent Thesis Awards 2021<\/strong><\/p><p>The University of Luxembourg will confer Excellent Thesis Awards to honour doctoral graduates who have demonstrated excellence, originality and depth of knowledge in their thesis.<\/p><p>This year, 17 graduates from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/fstm\/doctoral_school_in_science_and_engineering_dsse\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Doctoral School of Science and Engineering<\/a>\u00a0(DSSE), the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/formations\/fdef\/doctoral_school_in_economics_finance_and_management_dsefm\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Doctoral School in Economics, Finance\u00a0and Management<\/a>\u00a0(DSEFM), the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/fhse\/doctoral_school\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Doctoral School in Humanities and Social Sciences<\/a>\u00a0(DSHSS) and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/formations\/fdef\/ecole_doctorale_de_droit\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Doctoral School of Law<\/a>\u00a0receive this award.<\/p><p>Ten of the 17 award winners are female candidates.<\/p><p>In the run-up to the Graduation Ceremony, we present three award winners in a sneak preview.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Today, Vitus Sproten works as chief assistant at Belgium\u2019s State Archive in Eupen. He conducted his PhD research at the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/c2dh\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History<\/a> under the supervision of Prof. Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/c2dh\/people\/andreas_fickers\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Andreas Fickers<\/a>. His work focuses on the history of \u201cfree\u201d radio stations: \u201cDer Klang des Strukturwandels. Die Geschichte der Freien Radios in den Niederlanden, Belgien und Nordrhein-Westfalen (1975-1990)\u201c &#8211; The sound of structural change\u201d reviews the history of free radios in the Netherlands, Belgium and North Rhine-Westphalia (1975-1990)).<\/p><p>The so-called \u201cfree\u201d radio stations shook up the often-placid radio landscape dominated by public service media and a limited number of commercial radio stations as of the mid-seventies. Operated by aficionados in a mostly illegal space, restricted to limited coverage areas and focusing on local topics and \u201cyoung\u201d music beyond the mainstream, they contributed to define the sound of an era.<\/p><p>The dissertation skillfully combines the study of the emergence of free radio stations with a socio-historical perspective on the so-called \u00ab\u00a0structural change\u00a0\u00bb of Western European countries after the \u00ab\u00a0<i>trente glorieuses<\/i>\u00ab\u00a0, the three post-war decades of dynamic economic growth. Vitus Sproten\u2019s methodology and his pioneering work on collecting and interpreting source material so far neglected by academic research was particularly praised by the jury who concluded that the dissertation breaks new scientific ground in terms of subject, method and performance.<\/p><p>The dissertation sheds light on a gradual transition of the European radio landscape in the 1970s and 1980s. Sproten argues that the numerous social and economic changes of the time were made audible in many ways through free radio stations: In industrial regions, numerous radios addressed the plight of the working class, were founded by the unemployed or shaped blueprints for the future. In rural regions, a gradual connection to urban lifestyles took place, which was strongly reflected in the broadcasts of the new radio stations. They became important media producers in rural areas from which many newspapers had withdrawn during the decades of the economic boom or where there had never been any audiovisual media coverage.<\/p><p>A very special group shaped the independent radio stations and their destinies: young people, as a group particularly influenced by structural change, founded radio stations everywhere, reflected in their programmes on their life-world situation or played music they liked.<\/p><p>The decline of free radio as a mass phenomenon was linked to structural change. The transition of the Western European states to so-called \u00ab\u00a0service economies\u00a0\u00bb also had an impact on the independent broadcasters. They quickly became agents in a commercialised media landscape and became new \u201cvoices\u201d of the advertising world.<\/p><p>What makes free radio stations so exciting from today&rsquo;s perspective is the fact that they had a lasting influence on the media world and its development. They give us deep insights into the cultural, social, economic and societal horizons of the 1970s and 1980s and reveal what many thousands of radio amateurs found important in their everyday lives and what millions of listeners listened to throughout Western Europe.<\/p><p>Vitus Sproten receives an Excellent Thesis Award from the University of Luxembourg\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwfr.uni.lu\/fhse\/doctoral_school\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Doctoral School in Humanities and Social Sciences<\/a>\u00a0(DSHSS).<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"biography\"\n    >\nBiography<\/h3>\n<p>Vitus Sproten was a PhD candidate at the University of Luxembourg&rsquo;s Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C\u00b2DH) from March 2017 to November 2020.
