Do you want to hear what scientific data sounds like? Eager to discover the fascinating links between science and music? Then\u00a0Rockhal\u00a0on\u00a0Saturday, December 3rd, 2022, is the place to be for the final event of the Esch2022 project \u201cThe Sound of Data \u2013 Science meets Music\u201d.<\/p>

For\u00a0The Sound of Data, researchers from the\u00a0University of Luxembourg (FSTM, SnT, C2DH)\u00a0and the\u00a0LIST\u00a0collected scientific data<\/a>\u00a0and collaborated with local and international musicians to create sounds and music. For this, the musicians were introduced to the method of sonification during\u00a0The Sound of Data<\/i>\u00a0artist residency. You can discover the outcome of this creative and innovative process and see the musicians perform live on stage at Rockhal on Saturday, December 3rd, 2022, along with Valery Vermeulen, who supervised the artist residency, and headliner Max Cooper, a leading figure in electronica, who will present his new album in an immersive live show!<\/p>

About The Sound of Data<\/strong><\/p>

Where Science meets Music<\/p>

The Esch2022 project\u00a0The Sound of Data<\/i>\u00a0\u2013 a collaborative endeavor by the University of Luxembourg (uni.lu), the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and Centre de Musiques Amplifi\u00e9es, Rockhal \u2013 aimed at bringing together the worlds of science and music in Belval. And more precisely at transforming scientific data into music, using the innovative and experimental approach of data sonification.<\/p>

The contributions of researchers of the University of Luxembourg were wide ranging and spectacular:\u00a0Oliver Glassl<\/strong>\u00a0from the\u00a0Emmanuel Defay<\/strong>aculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (uni.lu)\u00a0collaborated with\u00a0Cosme Milesi-Brault<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Stefan Krebs<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0LISTLars Wieneke<\/strong>in collecting traffic data of roads in and around Belval \u2013 together they collected more than 1,500 hours of audio material as well as around 200,000 lines of different traffic data points. This data will be sonified by All Reitz Reserved, SpudBencer, Tessy Troes, and Theerens Cousins.\u00a0Djamila Aouada<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Enjie Ghorbel<\/strong>\u00a0(C2DH)\u00a0provided the musicians with data from digitised daily newspapers, covering approximately 100 years from 1850 onwards. This dataset will be taken on by Catherine Elsen, Virgilio Fernandez, Pol Belardi and Slumbergaze.\u00a0Hugo\u00a0Parlier<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Bruno Teheux<\/strong>\u00a0(SnT)\u00a0provided the artists with data of a synthetic 3D human body scan \u2013 this will be the basis for a commissioned piece of Valery Vermeulen. F<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0(DMATH), in their project\u00a0ReShape<\/a>, crowdsourced over 20,000 drawings which Hester Bolle, Thomas Evans (Timelord) and Mike von der Nahmer are currently sonifying in very different ways.<\/p>

These new kinds of musical compositions will be disclosed at the project\u2019s final event, alongside the immersive live show of headliner Max Cooper, who in the past decade has been quite successful in interrogating and furthering the intersection between electronic music, visual art, technology, and science.<\/p>
