Scholarship, Stewardship, and Humanities Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\"><p>While the humanities have caught the \u201cbig data\u201d wave, \u201clittle data\u201d remains the norm in those many domains where evidence is scarce and labor-intensive to acquire. Until recently, data was considered part of the process of scholarship, essential but largely invisible. In the \u201cbig data\u201d era, data have become valuable products to be captured, shared, reused, and stewarded for the long term. They also have become contentious intellectual property to be protected, especially in the humanities. Public policy leans toward open access to research data, but rarely provides the public investment necessary to sustain access. Data practices are local, varying from field to field, individual to individual, and country to country. As the number and variety of research partners expands, so do the difficulties of sharing, reusing, and sustaining access to data. Until the larger questions of knowledge infrastructures and stewardship are addressed by research communities, \u201cno data\u201d may become the norm for many fields. This talk will explore the stakes and stakeholders in research data, in interdisciplinary humanities research, and implications for policy and practice, drawing upon the presenter\u2019s book, <i>Big Data, Little Data, No Data: Scholarship in the Networked World<\/i> (MIT Press, 2015), and subsequent research.<\/p><p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.christineborgman.info\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Christine L. Borgman<\/a><\/strong>, Distinguished Research Professor and Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledgeinfrastructures.gseis.ucla.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Knowledge Infrastructures<\/a> at UCLA, is the author of more than 250 <a href=\"https:\/\/escholarship.org\/search\/?q=author%3ABorgman%2C%20Christine%20L\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">publications<\/a> in information studies, computer science, and communication. These include three books from MIT Press: <i>Big Data, Little Data, No Data: Scholarship in the Networked World<\/i> (2015), winner of the 2015 American Publishers Award for Professional and Scholarly Excellence (<a href=\"https:\/\/proseawards.com\/winners\/2016-award-winners\/#body\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">PROSE Award<\/a>) in Computing and Information Sciences; <i>Scholarship in the Digital Age: Information, Infrastructure, and the Internet<\/i> (2007); and <i>From Gutenberg to the Global Information Infrastructure: Access to Information in a Networked World<\/i> (2000). The latter two books won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asis.org\/awards\/book.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Best Information Science Book of the Year<\/a> award from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asist.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Association for Information Science and Technology<\/a> (ASIST). Professor Borgman\u00a0is a Fellow of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaas.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">American Association for the Advancement of Science<\/a> and of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.acm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Association for Computing Machinery<\/a>. Her activities in information policy include service on the Advisory Board of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/epic.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Electronic Privacy Information Center<\/a> (EPIC); the University of California <a href=\"http:\/\/ucop.edu\/privacy-initiative\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Privacy and Information Security Initiative<\/a>; UC <a href=\"http:\/\/senate.universityofcalifornia.edu\/committees\/ucacc\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Academic Computing and Communications Committee<\/a> (Vice Chair \/ Chair); UC <a href=\"https:\/\/security.ucop.edu\/about\/cyber-risk-governance\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Cyber Risk Governance Committee<\/a>; UCLA <a href=\"http:\/\/privacyboard.ucla.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Board on Privacy and Data Protection<\/a>; and UCLA <a href=\"http:\/\/evc.ucla.edu\/reports\/DGTF-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Data Governance Task Force<\/a> (Co-Chair). Prof. Borgman earned a PhD in Communication from Stanford University, an MLS in information science from the University of Pittsburgh, and a B.A. in mathematics from Michigan State University.
