{"id":8493,"date":"2021-03-04T12:19:14","date_gmt":"2021-03-04T11:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fr\/events\/adding-numbers-and-shuffling-cards\/"},"modified":"2021-03-04T12:19:14","modified_gmt":"2021-03-04T11:19:14","slug":"adding-numbers-and-shuffling-cards","status":"publish","type":"events","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fr\/events\/adding-numbers-and-shuffling-cards\/","title":{"rendered":"Adding numbers and shuffling cards"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\"><p>Persi Diaconis,\u00a0Professor of Statistics and Mathematics at Stanford University, will give a lecture about \u00ab\u00a0Adding numbers and shuffling cards\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p><p>This lecture is part of the \u00ab\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/math.uni.lu\/multiplicities\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Multiplicities<\/a>\u00a0\u00bb initiative launched by the Department of Mathematics at the University of Luxembourg.\u00a0Multiplicities is a broad audience seminar geared towards transversal topics whose aim is to highlight the diversity of mathematics and mathematicians.\u00a0It is especially intended for PhD students, interested in widening their horizons and is supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnr.lu\/projects\/geometry-probability-and-their-synergies\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">PRIDE Grant \u201cGeometry, Probability and their Synergies (GPS)<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"about-the-topic\"\n    >\nAbout the topic<\/h3>\n<p>When numbers are added in the usual way, \u00ab\u00a0carries\u00a0\u00bb appear along the way. If you are me (and hopefully you after this talk) it&rsquo;s natural to ask: \u00ab\u00a0How do the carries go? How many are there and, if you just had a carry, is it more or less likely that the next sum has a carry?\u00a0\u00bb Strangely, carries form a Markov chain with an \u00ab\u00a0amazing\u00a0\u00bb transition matrix. More strangely, this same matrix appears in the analysis of the usual way of riffle shuffling cards. I will explain the connection, tell you about the \u00ab\u00a0seven shuffles theorem\u00a0\u00bb and attempt to do it \u00ab\u00a0in English\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"about-the-speaker\"\n    >\nAbout the speaker<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/statistics.stanford.edu\/people\/persi-diaconis\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Persi Diaconis<\/a> is\u00a0a mathematician, statistician and former professional magician working in probability, combinatorics, and group theory with a focus on applications to statistics and scientific computing.
