These concerns have not fallen\u00a0on deaf ears, but were difficult to\u00a0follow in the absence of appropriate\u00a0methods for simple use by the\u00a0healthcare professionals. To fill this\u00a0gap, I propose an integrative\u00a0approach that relies on both <strong>philosophy,\u00a0experimental and clinical research\u00a0<\/strong>seeking to provide a measure\u00a0accompanied by an interpretation of the\u00a0patient\u2019s suffering. My goal is\u00a0to provide the medical profession with a\u00a0<strong>simple and effective tool for\u00a0diagnosing the suffering in patients<\/strong>.\u00a0To demonstrate a 10 year research, the talk will start\u00a0with philosophical\u00a0concepts on pain and suffering embedded into\u00a0experimental and clinical\u00a0studies assessing pain-related suffering in\u00a0healthy volunteers and then in\u00a0chronic pain patients. During our five\u00a0year collaborative investigation in\u00a0Germany and Luxembourg\u00a0(<i>PASCOM project<\/i>), we aimed to first induce suffering\u00a0in a pain\u00a0laboratory setting and secondly to manipulated it by means of\u00a0stimulation length, frequency of stimulation, and various stimulation\u00a0methods. Our results confirm the possibilities of measuring pain-related\u00a0suffering in experimental pain and what psychological variables testify\u00a0to\u00a0who is more prone to suffer under pain. The next, completing, stage\u00a0will be\u00a0to study the mechanisms underlying the interplay between pain\u00a0and suffering\u00a0in brain processes using artificial intelligence\u00a0and applying current\u00a0approaches in cognitive sciences.<\/p><p><strong>Biography<\/strong>: <strong>Dr\u00a0Smadar Bustan<\/strong>\u00a0is a philosopher and a scientist. She first conducted\u00a0experimental\u00a0studies at the Pain Laboratory, the University of Luxembourg\u00a0(Prof. F.\u00a0Anton) and then clinical studies on pain and suffering at the French\u00a0National Institute of Health and Medical Research unit situated at the\u00a0Pain\u00a0Clinic at Hospital Ambroise Par\u00e9, Paris. She is the\u00a0co-founder at Harvard and\u00a0head of the <strong>Interdisciplinary and\u00a0International Program on Suffering and pain<\/strong>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.suffering-pain.com\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">www.suffering-pain.com<\/a>).
