Prime numbers: From arithmetic to number theory<\/strong><\/p>

Prime numbers play a key role in arithmetic and are part of any standard school curriculum. They are also everywhere present in number theory, which is a far-reaching generalisation of arithmetic.<\/p>

Number theory is the mathematical foundation of modern cryptography, therefore its development has an impact on secure communication. <\/p>

This broad audience talk will illustrate important results about the distribution of prime numbers, and challenging open problems.<\/p>

Biography<\/strong><\/p>

Antonella Perucca studied mathematics at the Scuola Normale in Pisa, then became a researcher in number theory. Before joining the University of Luxembourg in September 2017, she was a lecturer in Germany, and had previously worked in Italy, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Canada and Belgium. Today, Antonella Perucca is Associate Professor in Mathematics and its Didactics at the Mathematics Research Unit (RMATH). She is also engaged in various didactical projects, invents mathematical exhibits, and is specialised in training future teachers.<\/p>
