Is it a symptom, a syndrome, a treatment, the usual, the exceptional,\u2028the group, the individual? <\/p><p><i>Particulars and Universals in Clinical and Developmental Psychology,<\/i> a new volume in the series: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.infoagepub.com\/series\/Perspectives-on-Human-Development\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Perspectives on Human Development<\/a> edited by Dieter Ferring (Universit\u00e9 du Luxembourg), Jaan Valsiner, Niels Bohr Professor of Cultural Psychology (Aalborg University) and Conchita D\u2019Ambrosio (Universit\u00e9 du Luxembourg) critically reflects on these questions.<\/p><p>An epistemologist, for example, focuses on the group and delivers group results. The clinician has to focus\u2028on the patient, although the patient may be perceived as one of a group (e.g., all patients with the same disease). The patient usually\u2028focuses on the clinician, but can take other opinions into account; especially, when the clinician is not considered to be the only\u2028authority. These dynamics \u2013 observable in therapy as well as in research \u2013 are critically reflected in this book, not only highlighting differences, but also commonalities individuals share: They all filter information and concentrate on certain aspects according to\u2028their socialization. They all have different expectations and can, yet, all deal with the same objective.
