Students from the Bachelor in Psychology are presenting their research activities at the Expra-Kongress on 27 May 2019. In addition to the presentation of students\u2019 research activities, guest lecturer Dr Marta Miklikowska (Ume\u00e5 University, Sweden) will present her research on attitudes towards immigrants. In her talk, Dr Miklikowska will show how anti-immigrant attitudes develop among the youth.<\/p>

Learning how to do scientific research is an important topic in the study programme of the Bachelor in Psychology at the University of Luxembourg. Students learn how to conduct a literature review, how to plan and perform empirical research, and how to present the results of their scientific endeavours. In the Expra congress, students introduce their studies to their fellow students, to the academic staff of the University of Luxembourg, and to the interested general public.<\/p>

During the summer term 2018-19, students worked on a variety of research topics in the field of psychology that are both fascinating and relevant to the society.<\/p>

Each year a young but well-established colleague from the diverse fields of psychology is invited to give a guest lecture. Dr Marta Miklikowska, Assistant Professor at Ume\u00e5 University in Sweden and a Visiting Scholar at European Research Centre on Migration and Ethnic Relations, Utrecht University, the Netherlands will provide the lecture \u201cDevelopment of Negative Attitudes Toward Immigrants: Risk and Protective Factors\u00a0\u00bb.<\/i><\/strong><\/p>

She is a social-developmental psychologist with a research focus on youth ethnic relations. She seeks to identify factors that contribute to or help to reduce the development of anti-immigrant prejudice in adolescence. To that end, she looks at the role of cross-ethnic friendships, empathy, and social contexts (parents, peers, school). She seeks to inform school-based anti-prejudice programs to facilitate positive relations among ethnically diverse youth and, thereby, more inclusive school contexts.<\/p>

In her talk, Dr Marta Miklikowska present her longitudinal research on the development of anti-immigrant attitudes among the Swedish majority youth as well as the risks and protective factors for the formation of prejudice. In particular, she will discuss the role of social contexts (parents, peers, schools) and adolescents\u2019 own characteristics in the development of attitudes toward immigrants. She will also discuss the relevance of her findings for school-based programmes aimed at facilitating positive relations among diverse youth. Her research suggests that schools can not only counteract the development of youth prejudice but also facilitate larger societal change through the positive effects tolerant youth have on others, including their parents.<\/p>
