The Intergenerational Persistence of Poverty in High-Income Countries<\/p>

This study investigates differences in the intergenerational persistence of poverty in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, and Switzerland. Using comparative sources of panel data, we seek to explain cross-national variation in the relationship between exposure to childhood poverty and poverty in young adulthood. To do so, we introduce an accounting framework that decomposes rates of young adult poverty into two components: (1) differential exposure levels to childhood poverty and (2) the relationship of those exposure levels to young adult poverty. We then interrogate these components in four steps. First, we document cross-national differences in the extent, persistence, depth, and age of exposure to childhood poverty. Second, we assess whether cross-national differences in these features of childhood poverty can be attributed to demographic differences or institutional differences. Third, we measure cross-national differences in how exposure to childhood poverty influences poverty in adulthood. Fourth, we clarify differences in the mechanisms through which childhood poverty affects young adult poverty.<\/p>
