The sample consists of secondary school students living in Budapest, the most cosmopolitan area of the country. The questionnaire results indicate that apart from various motivational dispositions, some emotions also have significant impact on the amount of effort students are willing to invest into language learning. In terms of the motivational scales: ideal L2, perceived importance of contact and cultural interest seem to be decisive for motivation. Concerning emotions, hope, pride and enjoyment show the strongest correlation with students\u2019 effort. The implications of the study will be discussed in the European context and future research ideas will be offered.<\/p><p><strong>Kata Csiz\u00e9r<\/strong>, PhD, works at the Department of English Applied Linguistics, School of English and American Studies, E\u00f6tv\u00f6s Lor\u00e1nd University, Budapest, Hungary.
