{"id":606,"date":"2022-01-28T08:49:01","date_gmt":"2022-01-28T08:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/website.prod.unilu.spikeseed.cloud\/fhse-en\/news\/no-end-in-sight-for-corona\/"},"modified":"2024-01-24T08:23:38","modified_gmt":"2024-01-24T07:23:38","slug":"no-end-in-sight-for-corona","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/news\/no-end-in-sight-for-corona\/","title":{"rendered":"No end in sight for Corona?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<p>Interview with Professor Claus V\u00f6gele for REVUE<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent interview that made the cover in Luxembourgish paper \u201cRevue\u201d, Prof. Claus V\u00f6gele assesses the current COVID-19 situation from his clinical psychological point of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since early 2020, the world lives in what we call a \u201cnew normal\u201d, but as Prof. V\u00f6gele underlines, it was not the world\u2019s first pandemic, and surely won\u2019t be the last. For some, work has drastically changed, with remote working and the pros and cons it entails; however, for some, it was already intrinsically part of the job. What was not part of the job, was the mental aspect and how it has affected us. And little things that did not bother us in the past, do now tenfold, like \u201cunder a magnifying glass\u201d explains Prof. V\u00f6gele.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i>\u201cOur thoughts hold the power to make us sick \u2013 or to heal us\u201d<\/i> says Prof. Claus V\u00f6gele.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is positive thinking the key to dealing with all this? What about other worldwide issues such as climate change, which worries Prof. V\u00f6gele more than Covid-19 does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on an international, ongoing survey of representative samples of people from 6 EU countries, the economic impact on individuals living in the Grand Duchy seems to have been moderate compared to its neighbours. Yet, despite a much higher quality of life, Luxembourg residents are more stressed about the situation than people in Spain, Italy or France. And why, you may ask?&nbsp; For Prof. V\u00f6gele, \u201cStability is crucial for Luxemburgish people,&nbsp;perhaps more so than for people living in other countries. Anything that shakes this stability becomes a source of stress\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insecurity and uncertainty about the future may have significantly contributed to increased self-reported depression, especially in young people, and also in elderly people in retirement homes. Students, especially international students, at the University were particularly affected, having to stay in their small studios or co-locations, unable to get out or to fly home. These issues were always there, says Prof. V\u00f6gele.
