On 25 March 2026, the University of Luxembourg organised a new session of its UniverCITY Talks series<\/a>, focusing on multilingual schooling and its implications for children\u2019s learning and development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nA unique but demanding system<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Luxembourg is often viewed as a model of multilingual education. Children typically begin schooling in Luxembourgish, transition to German in primary education, and later adopt French as instruction language in secondary school. While this system reflects the country\u2019s linguistic diversity, the discussion highlighted that its reality is more nuanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The panel, featuring Professor Christine Schiltz<\/a>, Associate Professor Constanze Weth<\/a>, and Associate Professor Sonja Ugen<\/a>, explored both the strengths and the challenges of this approach. A key theme was how language transitions affect not only academic performance but also children\u2019s cognitive development and educational experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
