The development of the dissociation between these two\nsystems, however, has been sparsely examined, and neuro-cognitive studies providing objective measures of this\ndissociation are still lacking. In addition, developmental models of number processing assume that children rely on pre-verbal representations to learn small number concepts (up to 4), and make use of semantic inductive procedures to infer the meaning of larger numbers. \n\nHow children make the transition between small and large non-symbolic and symbolic numbers is yet unclear. In the current project, we address this gap in the literature and we hypothesize that children make this transition\u2014and develop an independent symbolic number system\u2014by applying linguistic recursive rules to the learning of number concepts. \n\nTo test this claim, our research project\u2019s aims are threefold: 1) to further examine the relation between small and large symbolic and non-symbolic number concepts in children by means of neurocognitive measures; 2) using behavioural measures, to investigate the linguistic mechanisms enabling children to transition from relying on pre-verbal number representation to employing an independent symbolic number system; and 3) to set up a training study to investigate whether children\u2019s acquisition of numbers could be improved for numbers outside their current knowledge.","rp_start_date":"2021-12-01 13:58:36","rp_duration":36,"rp_main_funder":"FNR Luxembourg","rp_other_funders":[],"rp_external_partners":["University of Leuven (Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences)"],"rp_keywords":["Numerical Cognition","Numeracy acquisition","Language","Multilingualism"],"rp_members":[{"name":"Bert Reynvoet","isPI":true,"isExternal":true,"featuredImageUrl":"","detailsPageUrl":"","entity":"University of Leuven (campus Kortrijk, Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences)"},{"name":"Christine SCHILTZ","isPI":true,"isExternal":false,"featuredImageUrl":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/en\/person-image\/NTAwMDMwMTVfX0NocmlzdGluZSBTQ0hJTFRa","detailsPageUrl":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/people\/christine-schiltz\/","id":"50003015"},{"name":"Mila MARINOVA","isPI":false,"isExternal":false,"featuredImageUrl":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/en\/person-image\/NTAwMzUzNDVfX01pbGEgTUFSSU5PVkE=","detailsPageUrl":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/people\/mila-marinova\/","id":"50035345"}]},"research-project-status":[271],"research-project-type":[263],"field-of-interest":[293],"organisation":[154,150,147],"authorship":[296,107,111,109],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/core-researches\/15103"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/core-researches"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/core-researches"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/296"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/core-researches\/15103\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":16022,"href":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/core-researches\/15103\/revisions\/16022"}],"wp:authorship":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/296"},{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/107"},{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/111"},{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/109"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=15103"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"research-project-status","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/research-project-status?post=15103"},{"taxonomy":"research-project-type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/research-project-type?post=15103"},{"taxonomy":"field-of-interest","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/field-of-interest?post=15103"},{"taxonomy":"organisation","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fhse-en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/organisation?post=15103"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
