Pain is a complex experience that not only involves a physical sensation, but also emotional and cognitive processes. Our research focuses on how our pain experience is influenced by various psychological factors, such as stress, mood, attention, beliefs and expectations. We measure brain activity and physiological data such as heart rate, respiration rate and stress hormone levels. Most of our research involves experimental pain induction in healthy young and older adults. Insight in the psychological and biological mechanisms of pain perception and modulation in healthy individuals is an important first step in understanding chronic pain conditions and contributing to more effective interventions for managing pain.
</oembed>
