{"id":1557,"date":"2021-12-23T10:32:24","date_gmt":"2021-12-23T09:32:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fdef-fr\/events\/congratulations-to-dr-andrei-kostyrka-july-2020\/"},"modified":"2021-12-23T10:32:24","modified_gmt":"2021-12-23T09:32:24","slug":"congratulations-to-dr-andrei-kostyrka-july-2020","status":"publish","type":"events","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fdef-fr\/events\/congratulations-to-dr-andrei-kostyrka-july-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Congratulations to Dr. Andre\u00ef Kostyrka &#8211; July 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\"><p>On 22 July 2021, PHD <strong>Andre\u00ef Kostyrka<\/strong> has successfully defended his thesis \u00ab\u00a0<strong>Efficient Estimation with Non-Standard Sampling or Missing Endogenous Variables, and Conditional Density Modelling with Unobserved Copula-Connected Shocks<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb (under the supervision of Prof. Antonio Cosma) and has been granted the title of Doctor.\u00a0His excellent work has also qualified his thesis for the \u201cBest Thesis Award\u201d 2020\/2021.<\/p><p>We warmly congratulate him for the great work he has accomplished during his PHD and wish him an as brilliant career.<\/p><p><\/p><p><strong>Andre\u00ef&rsquo;s thesis abstract:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>In Chapter 1<\/strong>, it is shown how to use a smoothed empirical likelihood approach to conduct efficient semi-parametric inference in models characterised as conditional moment equalities when data are collected by variable probability sampling.\u00a0Results from a simulation experiment suggest that the smoothed-empirical-likelihood-based estimator can estimate the model parameters very well in small to moderately sized stratified samples.<\/p><p><strong>In Chapter 2<\/strong>, a novel univariate conditional density model is proposed to decompose asset returns into a sum of copula-connected unobserved \u2018good\u2019 and \u2018bad\u2019 shocks. The novelty of this approach comes from two factors: correlation between unobserved shocks is modelled explicitly, and the presence of copula-connected discrete jumps is allowed for.<\/p><p>The proposed framework is very flexible and subsumes other models, such as \u2018bad environments, good environments\u2019. The proposed model shows certain hidden characteristics of returns, explains investors\u2019 behaviour in greater detail, and yields better forecasts of risk measures. The in-sample and out-of-sample performance of the proposed model is better than that of 40 popular GARCH variants. A Monte Carlo simulation shows that the proposed model recovers the structural parameters of the unobserved dynamics. This model is estimated on S&#038;P 500 data, and time-dependent non-negative covariance between \u2018good\u2019 and \u2018bad\u2019 shocks with a leverage-like effect is found to be an essential component of the total variance. Asymmetric reaction to shocks is present almost in all characteristics of returns. The conditional distribution of returns seems to be very time-dependent with skewness both in the centre and tails.
