Maria Laitenberger was selected for the Global Exchange programme to spend the winter semester 2023\/2024 at Korea University<\/a> in Seoul. She is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Bachelor en Gestion<\/a> at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance at the University of Luxembourg. Maria received a scholarship from the University of Luxembourg to support her studies at Korea University, known for its strict selection criteria, admitting only the best students. We had an opportunity to sit down with Maria and discuss her experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You did very well during your studies at the University of Korea. What were the most challenging and rewarding academic experiences during your exchange semester?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most challenging part of my exchange semester was facing three midterms in one day. Despite the intensity, I successfully passed all of them. This experience strengthened my resilience, teaching me valuable lessons in planning, organization, and resource efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n

Being in a new country creates unique cultural experiences. What were the most noticeable academic and cultural differences you observed during your stay?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Korea University fosters a strong sense of community and school pride. I experienced the ‘Ko-yon Games,’ a sports tournament against Yonsei University (another private University), marked by cheer songs and dances. Academically, classes differed from Luxembourg. Studying at the Business School emphasized group projects and continuous evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n

What did you enjoy the most during your exchange?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I enjoyed the sense of belonging and the pride that comes with being a student at Korea University. Knowing that I was studying at a top University offering such a high-quality education and having the honor of being taught by the most esteemed professors in the country motivated me a lot. Equally, the opportunity to experience a new culture and explore the beautiful sights Korea has to offer was very enriching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did the scholarship from the University of Luxembourg enhance your study exchange? Were there specific opportunities or activities that it facilitated for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scholarship covered living expenses such as dormitory fees, food and school materials. The support thus provided allowed me to fully immerse myself in the academic and cultural experience at Korea University. I am very grateful that I did not have to worry about living conditions and could enjoy my learning experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not your first study exchange. As someone with prior experience in study exchanges, what advice would you give to those who are considering or planning to go for an exchange semester?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try to learn a bit of the language prior. This will facilitate daily interactions, orientation and making friends.  Secondly, pay attention to the specificities of the program. My decision to apply to Korea University was very much determined by the quality of its Business School and its network. It also pays off to do research when choosing your classes to ensure that they are adequate to your level. <\/p>\n\n\n
