{"id":14284,"date":"2024-08-01T08:26:33","date_gmt":"2024-08-01T06:26:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fdef-en\/?post_type=news&#038;p=14284"},"modified":"2024-09-16T11:43:43","modified_gmt":"2024-09-16T09:43:43","slug":"insights-from-cesifo-working-paper-by-international-economics-experts","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fdef-en\/news\/insights-from-cesifo-working-paper-by-international-economics-experts\/","title":{"rendered":"Insights from CESifo working paper by international economics experts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<p>Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fdef-en\/people\/michel-beine\/\">Michel Beine<\/a>, a full professor specialised in international economics, and Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/fdef-en\/people\/andreas-vortisch\/\">Andreas Vortisch<\/a>, a postdoctoral researcher, both from the Department of Economics and Management, have co-authored a significant working paper for CESifo titled &#8220;<strong>The Impact of a Possible Trump Reelection on Mexican Immigration Pressures in Alternative Countries<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their research, in collaboration with Prof. Michel Bierlaire, Dr. Evangelos Paschalidis (both at EPFL), and Prof. Silvia Varotto (ENTPE), exploits data from the Gallup World Poll Surveys.<br>Their work reveals that the disapproval of US leadership under then-President Trump diminished the country&#8217;s attractiveness as an immigration destination among respondents in Mexico.<br>The researchers use a cross-nested logit model to allow for heterogeneous substitution patterns between alternative locations. Applying this approach, they simulate the impact of a Trump reelection based on different scenarios for this shift in disapproval.
