The seminar aims to have an indepth discussion on a different human rights issue in each seminar. Presentations of 15 to 20 minutes (or up to 30 minutes if we have two or more speakers) will be followed by a group discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The seminars will be held on Wednesdays during lunchtime (unless otherwise stated), and sandwiches and water will be provided for registered participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PhD students will be awarded 1 ECTS for attending 5 seminars and 1 ECTS for presenting in one of the seminars. Candidates who would like to present an HR-related topic are welcome to contact us.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-spacer is-spacer-size-sm\"><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>About Dr Marco Longobardo:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Marco Longobardo<\/strong><\/em><em> holds a five-year master&#8217;s degree in Law from the University of Messina (2012) and a PhD in Public International Law from the University of Rome \u2018Sapienza\u2019 (2016). He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. The Italian Ministry of University and Research awarded him the Italian National Scientific Habilitation as Associate Professor of International Law (2019-2028).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>He is presently a Reader in International Law at the School of Law of the University of Westminster. In 2023 he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Trento, the University of Messina, and the Universit\u00e9 Libre de Bruxelles. In the past, he lectured on Public International Law, International Humanitarian Law, International Litigation before the ICJ, and EU Law at the University of Messina, for the Italian Ministry of Defence, and for the Italian Red Cross.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>He has published widely in the field of public international law, including <\/em>jus ad bellum<em>, international humanitarian law, and international criminal law. His scholarship has been cited in official documents by the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, the United Nations International Law Commission&#8217;s Special Rapporteur on the Protection of the Environment in relation to Armed Conflicts, and international NGOs. His research has been cited by states litigating international disputes before the International Court of Justice and the UN Committee on Elimination of Racial Discrimination.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For his research, he has received the 2021 Paul Reuter Prize administered by the International Committee of the Red Cross, an Honorable Mention for the 2023 Lieber Prize awarded by the American Society of International Law, and the 2021 Italian Society of International and European Union Law Prize (Premio SIDI). He was also awarded the third places at the 2020 Rosalyn Higgins Prize and at the 2021 Junior Scholar Award of the Asian Society of International Law.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>His monograph on<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/gb\/academic\/subjects\/law\/humanitarian-law\/use-armed-force-occupied-territory?format=HB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Use of Armed Force in Occupied Territory<\/a> <em>was published by<\/em> Cambridge University Press <em>in 2018. It has received critical acclaim by reviews appeared in the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jcsl\/article-abstract\/24\/3\/642\/5522143\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Journal of Conflict &amp; Security Law<\/a>, <em>the<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/rbdi.bruylant.be\/public\/index.php?module_id=00000000006&amp;rec_id=00000018742\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Revue belge de droit international<\/a>, <em>the<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ismllw.org\/REVIEW\/2018-2019%20BOOK%20REVIEW%201.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Military Law and the Law of War Review<\/a>, <em>the<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gyil.org\/?page_id=564\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">German Yearbook of International Law<\/a>, <em>the<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euppublishing.com\/doi\/abs\/10.3366\/elr.2020.0622\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Edinburgh Law Review<\/a>, <em>and the<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/laf.ge\/journals\/index.php\/test\/issue\/view\/14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Levan Alexidze Journal of International Law<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His articles appeared in important peer-reviewed journals, including The European Journal of International Law, The Asian Journal of International Law, The Journal of International Criminal Justice, The Journal of Conflict &amp; Security Law<em>, <\/em><em>the<\/em> Israel Law Review, <em>the<\/em> Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law, The Texas International Law Journal, The Melbourne Journal of International Law, The Netherlands International Law Review, International Law Studies, <em>the<\/em> International Community Law Review, <em>the<\/em> <em>L<\/em>aw and Practice of International Courts and Tribunals, <em>the<\/em> Zeitschrift f\u00fcr ausl\u00e4ndisches \u00f6ffentliches Recht und V\u00f6lkerrecht<em>, <\/em>The German Yearbook of International Law, The Polish Yearbook of International Law, The Spanish Yearbook of International Law<em>, <\/em><em>the<\/em> Rivista di diritto internazionale, <em>the<\/em> Anuario espa\u00f1ol de derecho internacional, <em>the<\/em> Wisconsin International Law Journal, <em>as well as in several prestigious edited books<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>He is the reviews editor of the<\/em> Journal of International Humanitarian Legal Studies, <em>and he sits in the advisory board of the<\/em> International Community Law Review, <em>in the editorial board of the <\/em>Journal du Droit Transnational, <em>and in the review board of<\/em> Quaderni di SIDIBlog. <em>He was a guest editor of the <\/em><em>International Criminal Law Review<\/em><em> and a member of the editorial board of the <\/em>Journal on the Use of Force in International Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>He has presented his scholarship at a number of important international conferences and events hosted, <\/em><em>inter alia<\/em><em>, in Belgium, Brazil, France, Georgia, Germany, India, Italy, Israel, Netherlands, Palestine, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, UK, and US.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>He has organized several high-profile conferences and seminar series at the University of Westminster and the University of Messina.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>He is a member of the Italian Society of International and EU Law, the European Society of International Law, the Asian Society of International Law, the International Institute of International Law of Sanremo, the Occupation Studies Research Network, and the International Law Association.
