We build a new dataset of thousands of these natural experiments from 2000 onwards to estimate the expected long term housing yield, y\u2217. Starting from a level of 5.3%, y\u2217 starts to fall during the Great Recession, reaching a low of 2.8% in 2023. Real time data shows y\u2217 has not risen since 2021, despite rising shorter term yields. Cross-sectional estimates show that y\u2217 is higher in areas with more housing risk, and falls by more in areas with more inelastic housing supply.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-spacer is-spacer-size-sm\"><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>About Prof. Atif Mian:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. Mian is the John H. Laporte, Jr. Class of 1967 Professor of Economics, Public Policy, and Finance at Princeton University. He began his academic journey in 2001 after completing his bachelor\u2019s degree in Mathematics with Computer Science and earning a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT. Prior to joining Princeton in 2012, he taught at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His research centers on finance and macroeconomics, with a broader focus on understanding how individuals connect to create what we refer to as the economy. He views economics as a means to help society connect in ways that result in a whole greater than the sum of its parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2007, he co-founded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cerp.org.pk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Economic Research in Pakistan (CERP)<\/a>, a non-profit research institute dedicated to economic research, teaching, and innovation. Additionally, he serves as the director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/jrc.princeton.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Julis-Rabinowitz Center for Public Policy and Finance<\/a> at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those interested in his work, his earlier book, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/atif.scholar.princeton.edu\/houseofdebt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House of Debt<\/a>\u201d (co-authored with Amir Sufi), provides valuable insights. The academic foundation behind the book was summarized at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5jxu0LChvAY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2018 Nobel symposium<\/a>. He also discussed the fundamental ideas of the book in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vMUR0DMHmb4&amp;t=3s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview with Thomas Friedman<\/a>, and the policy implications were outlined in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/05\/18\/business\/the-case-against-the-bernanke-obama-financial-rescue.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York Times article<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, his research delves into the profound implications of rising inequality for the macroeconomy, including aspects such as growth, financial markets, monetary policy, and fiscal policy. He outlines some of this agenda in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/Publications\/fandd\/issues\/2019\/09\/profile-of-princeton-economist-atif-mian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IMF magazine<\/a> interview, and his working papers and published work <a href=\"https:\/\/atif.scholar.princeton.edu\/publication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can be accessed here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-spacer is-spacer-size-sm\"><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Language: <\/strong>English<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a free seminar.
