More than 55 million people live with it worldwide and this number is expected to increase to 150 million by 2050. Alzheimer\u2019s disease, the most common neurodegenerative disorder, is responsible for 60-80% of all dementia cases. It causes memory loss, cognitive decline, and profoundly alters the behaviour of affected individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite extensive research, the biological mechanisms behind Alzheimer\u2019s disease remain elusive and no cure exists yet. However, recent insights have opened new avenues for prevention and risk reduction. The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/lcsb-en\/\"> Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine<\/a> (LCSB) of the University of Luxembourg is committed to addressing Alzheimer\u2019s on multiple fronts, from early detection to innovative treatments. With your support, our researchers can drive breakthroughs that offer hope for effective prevention and improved care for those affected by this devastating disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"why-support-alzheimers-research\"\n    >\n<strong>Why support Alzheimer&#8217;s research?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Alzheimer&#8217;s disease affects millions of people worldwide, causing memory loss, cognitive decline and profound challenges for families and caregivers. Despite its prevalence, there is still much to understand and many breakthroughs to be made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"alzheimers-is-not-a-disease-of-old-age-as-previously-thought\"\n    >\nAlzheimer&#8217;s is not a disease of old age, as previously thought<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We now know that the disease begins years, even decades, before the first clinical symptoms appear. Alzheimer&#8217;s disease is therefore not a disease of old age, as previously thought, but a disease of middle age. What is generally understood by the disease is already the &#8220;final stage&#8221; of a slow but steady process of nerve cell degeneration. For this reason, therapies are often no longer effective when clinical symptoms are already present and the condition of those affected deteriorates. The earlier therapy and secondary prevention, i.e. measures to slow down the disease process, are started, the more promising they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your support will fund groundbreaking research to understand the causes of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, develop new treatments and ultimately find a cure.
