{"id":8442,"date":"2022-05-04T08:38:13","date_gmt":"2022-05-04T08:38:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/website.prod.unilu.spikeseed.cloud\/en\/news\/university-researcher-receives-the-first-eic-grant-in-luxembourg\/"},"modified":"2022-05-04T08:38:13","modified_gmt":"2022-05-04T08:38:13","slug":"university-researcher-receives-the-first-eic-grant-in-luxembourg","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/en\/news\/university-researcher-receives-the-first-eic-grant-in-luxembourg\/","title":{"rendered":"University researcher receives the first EIC grant in Luxembourg"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\"><p>A consortium including the University of Luxembourg has been awarded a prestigious PathFinder Open grant of the\u00a0European Innovation Council\u00a0(EIC) that supports innovative and disruptive technologies with high impact.<\/p><p>The grant goes to a research project called \u201cREusable MAsk Patterning\u201d (REMAP) which aims to establish a paradigm shift in the field of microfabrication, a process used to fabricate components at nanometres to micrometres scales that are essential to our daily life, such as microprocessors, sensors and flat panel displays.<\/p><p>The consortium behind REMAP is composed of the <a href=\"https:\/\/unige.it\/en\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"University of Genova\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Genova<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnrs.fr\/en\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique\" rel=\"noopener\">Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique<\/a> (CNRS) of France, the <a href=\"https:\/\/inl.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory\" rel=\"noopener\">International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.demokritos.gr\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"National Centre for Scientific Research\" rel=\"noopener\">National Centre for Scientific Research &#8220;Demokritos&#8221;<\/a> of Greece, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.solvionic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Solvionic S.A.\" rel=\"noopener\">Solvionic S.A<\/a>., a company producing specialised chemical products, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rina.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"RINA\" rel=\"noopener\">RINA<\/a>, a certifying company, and the University of Luxembourg.<\/p><p>This is the first grant of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eic.ec.europa.eu\/index_en\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"European Innovation Council\" rel=\"noopener\">European Innovation Council<\/a>\u00a0(EIC) awarded to a researcher in Luxembourg: Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/pace.uni.lu\/phillip-dale\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Philip Dale\" rel=\"noopener\">Phillip Dale<\/a>, Full Professor in Physics at the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/fstm\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine\" rel=\"noopener\">Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine<\/a>.<\/p><p>Common methods of microfabrication involving projection lithography and vacuum deposition generate massive amounts of waste due to single-use stencils when creating the layers of patterned structures on a substrate such as an integrated circuit, and require vast amounts of water and energy. Currently, 1 m\u00b2 of microchips requires 234,000 L of water and 15,000 kWh of energy.
