{"id":7731,"date":"2020-01-20T14:28:33","date_gmt":"2020-01-20T14:28:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/website.prod.unilu.spikeseed.cloud\/en\/news\/megeno-and-university-partner-to-develop-eu-wide-genome-data-services\/"},"modified":"2020-01-20T14:28:33","modified_gmt":"2020-01-20T14:28:33","slug":"megeno-and-university-partner-to-develop-eu-wide-genome-data-services","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/en\/news\/megeno-and-university-partner-to-develop-eu-wide-genome-data-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Megeno and University partner to develop EU-wide genome data services"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\"><p>Megeno S.A. and the University of Luxembourg\u2019s Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) signed a partnership agreement on the development of user-centred, transparent and secure genome data services.<\/p><p>Megeno has also engaged EY Luxembourg who, in the context of its EYnovation programme, will provide\u00a0strategic advice on the positioning of Megeno\u2019s digital product offering within the EU\u2019s healthcare sector and on the development of a robust governance and oversight mechanism for its services.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"an-opportunity-with-a-significant-impact-on-european-healthcare-systems\"\n    >\nAn opportunity with a significant impact on European healthcare systems<\/h3>\n<p>Technological progress in genome sequencing has made it possible to obtain an individual\u2019s genome data, consisting of more than 6 billion letters of A, C, G and T, at a cost of less than 1,000 euros. This is beginning to revolutionise medical practice in diseases caused or influenced by genetic factors.<\/p><p>Megeno strives to leverage this medical progress, and expand genome-informed medicine from early diagnosis and personalised therapy to the prevention of disease. The partnership between Megeno and <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/snt\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">SnT<\/a> aims to develop a framework enabling the implementation of trustworthy services that address the numerous socio-technical, governance, and legal challenges that emerge when genomes of healthy individuals and their families are pre-emptively sequenced and preserved for future medical uses.<\/p><p>\u201cWe are excited to work with experts from SnT on usable, secure and trustworthy systems for genome data services\u201d, says Erich Felber, Megeno&#8217;s CEO. &#8220;With additional support from EY\u2019s Advisory Group, we will create a Luxembourg-based service available for institutions and citizens across Europe. Our goal is to establish personal genome data as a lifelong resource for the individual, supporting novel approaches for disease prevention&#8221;<\/p><p><strong>User-centred consent experience and data protection<\/strong><\/p><p>SnT\u2019s research will focus on the design of the consent experience in accordance with legal-ethical requirements, an essential component for a user-centred genome data management system.<\/p><p>\u201cEqually important as user consent are other instruments in support of compliance with data protection laws. For instance, measures to ensure that people and stakeholders are informed in a\u00a0meaningful and transparent way about how data will be processed and about how they can exercise their rights,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/snt\/people\/arianna_rossi\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Arianna Rossi<\/a>, research associate at\u00a0SnT.<\/p><p>\u201cSuch requirements call for specific research\u201d, continues <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/snt\/people\/gabriele_lenzini\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Assist. Prof Gabriele Lenzini<\/a>, who coordinates this partnership\u2019s research\u00a0activities at SnT.\u00a0\u201cFirst, since the digitised data may be linked not only to a person but also to the person\u2019s kin, a dynamic and new type of consent is\u00a0needed. Then, the data flow should be designed to be auditable and to elicit the trust of users. Finally, researchers at the SnT\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/snt\/research\/irisc\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Socio-technical Cybersecurity Interdisciplinary Research group\u00a0(IRiSC)<\/a> will look into the state-of-the-art technologies for privacy and security in the specific domain of genome data management.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"leveraging-the-strategic-position-of-luxembourg-and-its-digital-infrastructure\"\n    >\nLeveraging the strategic position of Luxembourg and its digital infrastructure<\/h3>\n<p>The partnership is aligned with Luxembourg\u2019s \u201cData-Driven Innovation Strategy for the Development of a Trusted and Sustainable Economy\u201d.
