It is funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnr.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodyear.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Goodyear<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"near-field-communication-a-promising-technology\"\n    >\nNear-Field Communication, a promising technology<\/h2>\n<p>Near-Field communication is poised to fundamentally change the automotive sector. \u201cNFC is a form of short-range wireless communication that relies on electric and magnetic fields generated around a transmitting antenna. This communication technology is now being explored for automotive applications due to its unique characteristics,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstc\/computer_science_and_communications_research_unit\/members\/ahmad_rida\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Ahmad Rida Tawakuli<\/a>, PhD student within the <a href=\"https:\/\/secan-lab.uni.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Security and Networking Laboratory (SECAN-Lab)<\/a> at the University, who initiated the project.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"focus-on-fleets\"\n    >\nFocus on fleets<\/h2>\n<p>This research project addresses the advantages of using near-field based automotive systems in applications where currently prevailing Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based systems cannot function properly and proposes a tire identification and diagnostic system for use in vehicle fleets.<\/p><p>The project will research the potential of near-field technology to replace wire- or RFID-based communication in certain vehicles, providing the driver and possibly the fleet administrator with tire data. \u201cThe system will contribute to road safety and the reduction of accidents by providing crucial real-time information about tires,\u201d explains Derek Shuttleworth, Manager of External Science and Technology at Goodyear. \u201cThis is a first step towards new automotive applications, and Luxembourg could become the hub for near-field communication research in Europe,\u201d adds Ahmad Rida Tawakuli.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"win-win-cooperation\"\n    >\nWin-win cooperation<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWith the support of the FNR, the University of Luxembourg and Goodyear are enhancing their collaboration for safe and sustainable transportation research in Luxembourg. This project will enable us to develop our expertise in near-field communication in cooperation with one of the world\u2019s leading manufacturers of tires.
