{"id":7524,"date":"2018-12-06T14:36:00","date_gmt":"2018-12-06T14:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/website.prod.unilu.spikeseed.cloud\/en\/news\/daniele-brida-wins-erc-award-for-laser-imaging-research\/"},"modified":"2018-12-06T14:36:00","modified_gmt":"2018-12-06T14:36:00","slug":"daniele-brida-wins-erc-award-for-laser-imaging-research","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/en\/news\/daniele-brida-wins-erc-award-for-laser-imaging-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Daniele Brida wins ERC-Award for Laser Imaging Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\"><p>The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded a Consolidator Grant to Daniele Brida, a researcher and Full Professor in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Luxembourg.<\/p><p>He will receive roughly two Million Euro over a period of 60 months to use sophisticated laser-based imaging technology to study the properties of materials.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"setting-up-a-new-laboratory\"\n    >\nSetting up a new laboratory<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstm\/dphyms\/people\/daniele_brida\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof Brida<\/a> who joined the University of Luxembourg only in 2018 coming from the University of Konstanz in Germany will use the grant to strengthen his team of researchers and to set up a new laboratory. In his project \u201cUltrafast tunneling microscopy by optical field control of quantum currents \u2013 UpTEMPO\u201d, he will use ultrafast laser-based instruments to study the inner workings of materials.<\/p><p>\u201cThis <a href=\"https:\/\/erc.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"European Research Council\" rel=\"noopener\">ERC<\/a> grant will allow me to pursue a very interesting and new research direction and firmly establish in Luxembourg ultrafast techniques to investigate fundamental phenomena in matter,\u201d Prof. Brida explains.<\/p><p>Daniele Brida will develop the technology and the experimental set-up that use very fast laser pulses to induce currents through samples to measure the behavior and dynamics of electrons in nanostructures and molecules. \u201cThe objective is to understand the mechanisms that determine the properties of matter with the long-term vision of designing advanced materials for a broad spectrum of applications that range, for example, from photovoltaics to high-speed electronics and sensing,\u201d Daniele Brida adds.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"increasing-numbers-of-erc-grants\"\n    >\nIncreasing numbers of ERC Grants<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe are extremely happy about the success of Prof. Brida with this ERC proposal in the interdisciplinary field of laser physics, time-resolved spectroscopy, and surface microscopy,\u201d comments Prof. Ludger Wirtz, Head of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstm\/dphyms\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Physics and Materials Science Research Unit<\/a> at the University of Luxembourg. \u201cIt is the fourth ERC grant obtained within the Physics and Materials Science Research Unit and the sixth one obtained by professors of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/fstm\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication<\/a>.
