He obtained his PhD in 2006 from the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia in Norwich (UK), a part of his doctoral research having been conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen (Germany). After three years of postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley (USA), he returned to his native Luxembourg in early 2010 through an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fjojo_15u6g\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">ATTRACT Fellowship of the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR)<\/a>. He initially established his research group at the Centre de Recherche Public \u2013 Gabriel Lippmann (now Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology, LIST) but later joined the LCSB where he is the Head of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/lcsb\/research\/eco_systems_biology\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Eco-Systems Biology research group<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>An award for research work on the human microbiome <\/strong><\/p><p>Paul Wilmes\u2019 research focuses on studying the key functionalities of microbial communities, including the ones that are found in and on the human body. His group has pioneered innovative methodologies for studying communities of microbes at the molecular level over space and time. This has allowed for example to define lifestyle strategies of distinct populations of microorganisms and link these to their genetic and functional characteristics, with applications in many different fields such as health, water treatment or bioenergy production. These approaches also allow to unravel the interactions between microbiomes and their hosts. In this context, his research group has developed a device called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=3&#038;v=EGyeH3MdPnU\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">HuMiX<\/a>, which allows the co-culture of human cells and bacteria under conditions representative of the human gut. This unique artificial model the size of a beer mat helps scientists to understand the impact of the gut microbiome and diet on human health<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-dev4-reusable-blocks-image  object-fit--contain\">\n    \n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-block-image unilux-custom-image-block\"\n                alt=\"\"\n            src=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/07\/group_picture.jpg\"\n                srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/07\/group_picture-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/07\/group_picture.jpg 540w\"\n                style=\"object-position: 50.00% 50.00%; font-family: &quot;object-fit: contain; object-position: 50.00% 50.00%;&quot;; aspect-ratio: 3\/2; object-fit: contain; width: 100%;\"\n        loading=\"lazy\"\n\/>    <\/figure><p><\/p><p>Paul Wilmes has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publications. He is a frequently invited speaker at international scientific symposia and academic institutions, a member of several national and international scientific organisations, and he has won several prizes for his scientific work. \u201cThe jury members particularly highlighted the quality of his scientific publications, his international involvement, the fact that he obtained several patents and coordinated with his group the development of the HuMiX model,\u201d explained Prof. Pierre Seck, president of the <i>Section des sciences de l\u2019Institut Grand-Ducal<\/i>.<\/p><p>\u201cI am humbled and extremely grateful for receiving this year\u2019s Grand Prix of the Institut Grand-ducal.
