Together with theory and experimentation, Computational and Data Sciences have become the third pillar of scientific investigation. Nowadays, it underpins the majority of technological, economic and societal feats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have entered an era in which soaring amounts of data offer enormous opportunities, but only to those who are able to harness them. We are standing at a turning point where the economic success of a nation is determined by its ability to exploit the vast amounts of information daily generated\u201d, explains Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/recherche\/fstm\/doe\/members\/andreas_zilian\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Andreas Zilian<\/a>, coordinator of the DTU DRIVEN at the University of Luxembourg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"develop-common-data-driven-approaches\"\n    >\nDevelop common data-driven approaches<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The specificity of the DTU DRIVEN lies in its interdisciplinary as it covers a wide range of fields, from hard sciences to human sciences, including economics, and gathers researchers from 3 doctoral schools (<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/fstm\/doctoral_school_in_science_and_engineering_dsse\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">DSSE<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/formations\/fdef\/doctoral_school_in_economics_finance_and_management_dsefm\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">DSEF<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwen.uni.lu\/fhse\/doctoral_school\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">DSHSS<\/a>) and 3 institutions (Uni.lu, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.list.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"LIST (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology)\" rel=\"noopener\">LIST<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liser.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"LISER (Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research)\" rel=\"noopener\">LISER<\/a>). Thus, the main challenge is to develop approaches common to a number of applications in various research areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithin the DTU, PhD students will acquire a solid data science background to use and develop cross-disciplinary data-driven modelling approaches. Based on machine learning algorithms, data-driven modelling enables to identify new relations in data, re-assess, reformulate and enhance previously established understanding\u201d, says Prof. Zilian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"three-research-groups\"\n    >\nThree research groups<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The DTU will be composed of 19 doctoral candidates clustered in three groups, namely \u201cComputational Physics and Engineering Sciences\u201d, \u201cComputational Biology and Life Sciences\u201d and \u201cComputational Behavioural and Social Sciences\u201d. In the first group, they will explore parameter identification of physically based models to better understand, for instance, the relationships between composition, structure and properties of molecular crystals. In the second group, they will investigate the classification of observations to automate tedious and expensive tasks such as classifying pictures of neurodegenerative diseases.
