This has obvious drawbacks for everyday applications, and a team of scientists led by\u00a0Dr Djamila Aouada\u00a0have set themselves the challenge of being able to arrive at accurate estimations of body shape regardless of clothing. \u2018In healthcare, for example, medical staff would be able to take comprehensive body measurements just by scanning their patients,\u2019 explains PhD candidate\u00a0Alexandre Saint, part of the University of Luxembourg&#8217;s Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust. \u2018The benefits of being able to infer this data, despite occlusion from clothing, would be enormous in terms of making 3D scanning a viable tool for medical practitioners and enhancing efficiency and patient comfort\u2019.<\/p><p>Another field in which the research could make significant contributions is security. Current techniques relying on face recognition could be greatly enhanced by the wealth of information full body scanning can provide. Unfortunately, current 3D technology relies on a large number of scans to arrive at an accurate body model. \u2018The aim is to be able to arrive at such models from only limited data\u2019, says Saint. \u2018Eventually, we will even be able to infer 3D information from 2D images.\u2019<\/p><p>Data confidentiality is of the greatest importance, and SnT is working closely with the Luxembourgish\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cnpd.public.lu\/fr.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Commission Nationale pour la Protection des Donn\u00e9es<\/a>\u00a0on this project.<\/p><p><strong>For further information, please email\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:shapify3D@uni.lu\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">shapify3D@uni.lu<\/a><\/strong><\/p><p>In collaboration with:<\/p><p><\/p><p><strong>Artec 3D<\/strong>\u00a0develops innovative 3D hardware and software solutions.
