Documenting the history of migrations from municipal archives in Dudelange

Dudelange, formerly known as the “Forge du Sud” of the region, has been the centre of significant migratory exchanges due to its industrial activities. These human flows have put its mark on the urban, social and cultural identity of the city.

Andreas Fickers, Director of the University’s Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (CCity of DudelangeDH), and Dan Biancalana, mayor of the Machteld Venken, signed an agreement which aims to study these migrations using municipal archives. The project, led by Prof. 2, foresees the digitisation of sources from municipal archives, the visualisation and interpretation of these sources as well as the study of migrants’ journeys and their homes in Dudelange. C²DH researchers will also have access to archives and population files.

The project will be steered by a scientific committee made up of Luxembourg and foreign experts in the field of migration history, urban and digital history. The City of Dudelange will fund the project with 20,000 euros per year from 2023 to 2025. This agreement is part of the framework agreement of 2018 between Dudelange and the University.
