SUMMARY:Women Leaders: Laura Bates
DESCRIPTION:Save the date\n\nOn 10 June, the University of Luxembourg will host renowned author Laura Bates. Her visit will include a public lecture open to all. More details and registrations will be available on this page soon.\n\nLecture\n\nEveryday sexism in the age of AI\n\nExtreme misogyny is flourishing online, boosted by a form of algorithmically-facilitated mass radicalisation we have never experienced before. We stand on the precipice of a new society transformed by AI, a society in which new technologies risk embedding existing inequalities into its very foundation. How do we move forward without repeating the mistakes of the past? How do we fight a problem that so many people still refuse to see? From biased algorithms to deepfake abuse and AI girlfriends, feminist activist and bestselling author Laura Bates will explore the unprecedented threats this moment presents, and some of the ways we can effectively tackle the problem.\n\nAbout the speaker\n\nLaura Bates is a best-selling author, keynote speaker and founder of the Everyday Sexism Project. Her books include Everyday Sexism, Men Who Hate Women and The New Age of Sexism. Laura writes regularly for the New York Times, Guardian and others.\n\nShe works closely with government, schools, businesses, police forces and bodies from the United Nations to the Council of Europe on sexism and inequality. Her campaigning has helped to put consent on the national curriculum, change Facebook’s policies on rape and domestic violence content and transform the British Transport Police’s approach to sexual violence on the transport network.\n\nIn recognition of Laura’s work surrounding sexism and gender inequality, she has been awarded a British Empire Medal and has been named Woman of the Year by Cosmopolitan, Red Magazine and The Sunday Times Magazine. She is also an Honorary Fellow of St John’s College, Cambridge, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.\n\nFree event with limited seating – registrations will open in end of March.\n\nThe Gender Equality Office organises this event.\n\nFor more information, please send an email to gender.equality@uni.lu\n\nLocation: https://mamashelter.com/luxembourg/\nRead more: https://www.uni.lu/en/events/women-leaders-laura-bates/
