Admission criteria

Your situation

  • You want to apply for a Bachelor’s programme
  • You are a non-EU citizen without a Luxembourg residence permit
  • You have one of the following:
    • an EU/EEA/Swiss school leaving certificate
    • an IBO certificate, Cambridge AS and A Levels
    • a school leaving certificate issued by an institution outside the European Union

Your criteria

  • Diploma

Please note that non-EU students need to be in possession of their school leaving certificate to apply. Any student completing school after 30 April of the current academic year cannot be considered for admission.

To be eligible to apply for a Bachelor programme, you must submit a request for recognition of the equivalence of your diploma to the Luxembourg Ministry of Education, Children and Youth.

Please note that this procedure takes a minimum of 6 weeks. You will need this document to submit your application, so we would recommend that you start the procedure a few months before applying to the University of Luxembourg.

If you have not yet received your equivalence document by the application period for your chosen study programme, you can still submit your application online. Make sure you do so within the deadline.

If your application is accepted, you will receive a letter informing you of the next steps to take. You will have until 15 November to submit your temporary authorisation to stay (autorisation de séjour temporaire – issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and proof of social security affiliation in person at our offices. You will then be given a letter of final admission.

If you fail to submit these documents, you will not be able to continue studying at the University of Luxembourg.

Please note that if you are not able to finalise your enrolment, it is not possible to defer admission to the next academic year.
You will have to apply from scratch, with a new ID number, and upload your documents again. The rules on application fees, language certificates, etc. will apply to you as they do for any new candidate.
Acceptance for a previous academic year does not guarantee acceptance of any subsequent applications.

  • Deadline

You are required to apply for a visa and residence permit for Luxembourg.

Please submit your application by the deadline applicable to non-EU citizens indicated on your programme web page.

Make sure that you check the specific deadline for your study programme. Deadlines vary from one programme to the next.

  • Language Skills

You need to show proof of your language skills at the level indicated for your chosen study programme.

  • Residency permit

Once you have been accepted onto the programme, you will also have to apply for a Luxembourg residence permit. This request must be submitted directly to the Luxembourg government by 1 July at the latest.

In case of admission acceptance, you will need to request your criminal record to undergo your immigration procedure. We strongly recommend you to request the criminal record of your country of residence in advance, to accelerate the procedure with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We suggest you request this document no later than the beginning of April, even if you have not received the result of your application.

  • Payment of enrolment fees

You will pay your enrolment fees once you arrive in Luxembourg. The amount to be paid is indicated on the web page for your study programme.
