Its research profile reflects the mission entrusted to the University of Luxembourg: producing new knowledge about the contemporary history of Luxembourg by studying phenomena and processes that have profoundly affected the country and whose transnational and comparative value exceeds the national perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the core of current research projects are the <strong>history of the Second World War<\/strong>, <strong>colonial history<\/strong>, <strong>social history<\/strong> and <strong>cultural history<\/strong>. Currently composed of 31 researchers, mostly PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers, the LHI research group gathers regularly by means of team meetings, an annual retreat, and a research seminar. Researchers of LHI are also actively involved in the struggle for better research conditions \u2013 especially through their engagement in favour of a revision of the Luxembourgish archival law from 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key objective of <strong>enhancing synergy<\/strong> within the research area involves collaborative efforts to advance digital methodologies for analysing various sources pertinent to Luxembourg\u2019s contemporary history: the automatic extraction of information from serial administrative sources (e.g. registration cards of Dudelange inhabitants), the development of a standard for digital search through existing oral testimonies, and a digital transcription of handwritten documents in Luxembourg.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nicolas Arendt<\/strong> is an FNR AFR holder analysing the engagement of the ARBED company in former Eastern Europe. <strong>Ira Yeroshko<\/strong> studies the use of visual media, such as film, animation and graphic novel, for\u00a0creating narratives about the ongoing Russia-Ukrainian war. The societal interest in the history of the Second World War is reflected in a significant number of projects: provenance research of Jewish property commissioned by the Luxembourgish state based on article 5 of its agreement with the Israeli Consistory in Luxembourg (under the supervision of Andreas Fickers). In 2024, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialshoah.lu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M\u00e9morial digital de la Shoah<\/a>\u00a0was further expanded. At the end of the year, <strong>over 150 family biographies<\/strong> were\u00a0available online. Machteld Venken leads a work package on the <strong>history of welfare within the Greater Region<\/strong> as part of the <strong>European Research Council Advanced Grant <\/strong>\u2018Social politics in European Borderlands. <a href=\"https:\/\/sociobord.eui.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A Comparative and Transnational Study<\/a>, 1870s-1990s\u2019 coordinated at the European University Institute of Florence. She received an <strong>FNR INTER grant<\/strong> from the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) and the <strong>Polish Science Center<\/strong> for the trilateral project \u2018<strong>Researching the Collecting, Preserving, Analysing and Disclosing of Ukrainian Testimonies of the War<\/strong>\u2019 conducted in cooperation with the Polish Academy of Sciences and the <strong>Center of Urban History in Lviv<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/u-core.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/u-core.org\/en\/<\/a>). The FNR CORE research and transmedia project\u00a0\u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/c2dh-en\/research-projects\/fomleg\/\"><em>Tracing the Legacy of Edward Steichen and the \u201cFamily of Man&#8221; Exhibition<\/em><\/a><em>\u2019<\/em> is led by <strong>Andreas Fickers.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Four PhD candidates conduct research funded by the FNR. In 2024, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.lu\/\">virtual exhibition<\/a> of the Second World War in Luxembourg and a <a href=\"https:\/\/mininghistory.uni.lu\">website<\/a> presenting the history of the National Miners\u2019 Monument and a registry of mining victims were launched. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tageblatt.lu\/headlines\/spoliation-des-biens-juifs-in-luxemburg-waehrend-des-zweiten-weltkriegs-die-arisierungs-maschinerie\/\">series of newspaper articles<\/a> <strong>on the spoliation of Jewish property<\/strong> was published in the <strong>Tageblatt<\/strong>, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/deindustrialization-and-the-politics-of-our-time.castos.com\/episodes\/confronting-decline-in-luxembourgs-steel-industry\">Podcast<\/a> on the decline in Luxembourg&#8217;s Steel Industry was aired ().<\/p>\n\n<p>Among the events organised by LHI members were the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/c2dh-en\/events\/launch-of-the-ww2-lu-online-exhibition\">inauguration of the digital exhibition of the Second World War<\/a>, and the <strong>study day \u2018Bridging Past and Present Borders<\/strong>.
