Its research profile reflects the mission entrusted to the University of Luxembourg: producing new knowledge about the contemporary history of Luxembourg by studying phenomena and processes that have profoundly affected the country and whose transnational and comparative value exceeds the national perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the core of current research projects are the history of the Second World War, colonial history, and social history (welfare, inequality, labour history). Within the FNR funded project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c2dh.uni.lu\/projects\/warlux-soldiers-and-their-communities-wwii-impact-and-legacy-war-experiences-luxembourg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Soldiers and their communities in WWII: The impact and legacy of war experiences in Luxembourg<\/a>, Nina Janz and Sara Maya Vercruysse organised the international conference on the conscription of non-German men and women into the Wehrmacht and Reichsarbeitsdienst. Thanks to additional funding, the project was accompanied by an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c2dh.uni.lu\/news\/240222-5-am-testimonies-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview project<\/a> on the impact of war experiences of Ukrainian refugees caused by the Russian invasion.<\/p>\n\n<p>Two PhD researchers receive FNR funding through the AFR funding line. Whereas Arnaud Sauer was writing up his research findings related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c2dh.uni.lu\/fr\/projects\/la-main-doeuvre-etrangere-dans-le-minett-durant-lentre-deux-guerres\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">foreign labor in the Minett during the interwar period<\/a>, Nicolas Arendt started to investigate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c2dh.uni.lu\/projects\/transformation-arbed-1973-2001-european-business-and-labour-history-transarb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the transformation of ARBED 1973-2001<\/a> through a transnational lens.<\/p>\n\n<p> In addition, Machteld Venken leads a work package on the history of welfare within the Greater Region as part of the European Research Council Advanced Grant <a href=\"https:\/\/sociobord.eui.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Social politics in European Borderlands. A Comparative and Transnational Study, 1870s-1990s<\/a> coordinated at the European University Institute of Florence. She was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Lorraine to conduct archival research on the cross-border welfare of Luxembourgish veterans after the First World War. The societal interest in the history of the Second World War is reflected in a significant number of projects. The research on the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c2dh.uni.lu\/projects\/soviet-ostarbeiters-and-pow-luxembourg-during-wwii\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Soviet Forced Labourers in Luxembourg during the WW2<\/a> conducted by Inna Ganschow reached a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnr.lu\/new-research-luxembourg-rtl-today-scilux-podcast-episode-dr-inna-ganschow\/?utm_source=FNR+Info&amp;utm_campaign=d719879171-FNR+INFO120123&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_488960294c-d719879171-154178807&amp;mc_cid=d719879171&amp;mc_eid=328c358254\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> breakthrough<\/a> thanks to the discovery of observation reports composed by the American army in 1944 and 1945, which are archived in the United States of America. <\/p>\n\n<p>Ongoing research on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c2dh.uni.lu\/projects\/history-spoliation-jewish-property-grand-duchy-luxembourg-1930s-1950s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spoliation of Jewish property<\/a> in the mid of the 20th Century was accompanied by a new public outreach project dedicated to the creation of a <a href=\"https:\/\/memorialshoah.lu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital Shoah memorial in Luxembourg<\/a> (both under the supervision of Denis Scuto).<\/p>\n\n<p> Following the successful launch of a C\u00b2DH-created <a href=\"https:\/\/ww1.lu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">virtual exhibition on the First World War in Luxembourg<\/a>, Christoph Br\u00fcll launched a new project developing a virtual exhibition of the Second World War in Luxembourg. Through conducting research on the role of Luxembourgish historical actors in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c2dh.uni.lu\/projects\/colonial-history-luxembourg-colux\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">colonisation of Africa<\/a>, the LHI axis contributes to an ongoing debate in Luxembourgish society. In 2022, LHI members visited the temporary exhibition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalmusee.lu\/en\/exhibitions\/luxembourgs-colonial-past\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Luxembourg\u2019s colonial past<\/a> in the MNHA and exchanged ideas with the exhibition\u2019s curator. In cooperation with the University of the Greater Region Centre for Border Studies and the Transfrontier Euro-Institute Network, LHI members hosted the international conference <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c2dh.uni.lu\/events\/borders-flux-and-border-temporalities-and-beyond-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Borders in Flux and Border Temporalities In and Beyond Europe<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n<p>The LHI research group also organised the second workshop of an international will, among others including the Centre for Urban History in Lviv (Ukraine) and the Polish Academy of Sciences, collaborating on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c2dh.uni.lu\/thinkering\/witnessing-now-challenges-emergency-archiving-and-oral-history-following-russian-invasion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">documentation of current war experiences<\/a>.
