{"id":1851,"date":"2023-11-08T08:45:01","date_gmt":"2023-11-08T07:45:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/c2dh-en\/?post_type=news&#038;p=1851"},"modified":"2024-03-05T15:31:59","modified_gmt":"2024-03-05T14:31:59","slug":"cfp-historical-arguments-and-the-digital","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/c2dh-en\/news\/cfp-historical-arguments-and-the-digital\/","title":{"rendered":"CfP &#8211; Historical Arguments and the Digital"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<p><strong>Historical Arguments and the Digital is an international conference to demonstrate the argumentative practices of Digital History and the broader historical profession, employing any form of methodology or tool under the umbrella of \u2018digital history\u2019 examining any historical period across the globe to present findings and arguments engaging with and contributing to historical narratives.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The conference will take place from 25 to 27 June 2024 at the University of Luxembourg, Belval Campus.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016, Franco Morretti argued that \u201csomehow digital humanities has managed to secure for itself this endless infancy, in which it is always a future promise.\u201d<sub><sup>1<\/sup><\/sub> In the years since, little has changed. Whilst there has been exponential growth in the number of resources, tools, and methodological discussions in the digital humanities, there remains limited contribution towards traditional historical narratives implementing these, increasing the apparent gap between DH and traditional history. Terminology in the digital humanities \u2013 networks, mapping, modelling \u2013 has long been used metaphorically to explore historical phenomenon; yet in digitalizing these ideas, we have gradually moved away from the analytical arguments these phrases were originally used for. The more digital methodologies are separated from traditional approaches \u2013 focusing on building without analysing and represented only on \u2018digital humanities\u2019 panels in historical conferences \u2013 the greater the risk is of becoming increasingly insular and closed-off, \u201can interdisciplinary silo in which we are only speaking to other displaced scholars.\u201d<sup>2<\/sup> As a result, the digital humanities are often still faced with the \u2018so-what\u2019 question: what impact can these new methods and approaches make on historical arguments and how can they advance scholarship?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>his conference seeks to address the \u2018so-what\u2019, promoting conversation as to how new research processes and methodologies might build into and contribute to traditional narratives. Though the building of digital resources and tools are in themselves important analytical and interpretative acts \u2013 and are slowly beginning to be recognised as such within the wider humanities \u2013 they are also vital building blocks for historical arguments that can exist as exemplars of both digital and traditional scholarship. This conference offers a space to consider how this gap might be closed once more, encouraging historical case studies reflecting on the ways in which digital methodologies have offered a means of exploring historical sources and expanding historical narratives and fostering digital history research questions that push beyond merely the descriptive to the interpretative and analytical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We invite abstracts of&nbsp;<strong>300-500 words<\/strong>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<strong>20-minute papers<\/strong>&nbsp;that demonstrate the argumentative practices of Digital History and the broader historical profession. These may employ any form of methodology or tool under the umbrella of \u2018digital history\u2019 examining any historical period across the globe, but must present findings and arguments engaging with and contributing to historical narratives. Papers will be arranged chronologically or by historical theme rather than methodological approach, reframing the focus on the historical contribution once more.
