The LOV\u00d3 project is part of the programme of the Biennale 2024 Esch capitale culturelle<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nWhat is LOV\u00d3?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The term LOV\u00d3 combines the words “love” (in English) and “av\u00f3” (grandmother in Portuguese) to refer to the memory of the grandmothers of the Portuguese and Cape Verdean community in Esch. Led by Myriam Dalal and Thomas Cauvin, researchers from the University of Luxembourg, this project uses oral history and art to give a voice to several Portuguese-speaking grandmothers residing in Esch-sur-Alzette, who have made this city their home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LOV\u00d3 explores the personal stories of these remarkable women, weaving a link between the private and public spheres, and between the individual and the collective. These grandmothers play an essential role as bearers of intangible cultural heritage, transmitting their knowledge and expertise in traditional practices, folklore, and culinary arts across generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nThe Experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The grandmothers’ testimonies will be highlighted through captivating audio-visual tours, consisting of light installations created by the visual artists Duarte Perry and Marieke Leene. These luminous works will be accompanied by audio excerpts from interviews conducted with the grandmothers, offering an intimate and moving perspective on their stories and their impact on the culture of Esch-sur-Alzette. Their voices will guide visitors through nocturnal tours scattered with elements mentioned during the interviews and reinterpreted by artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
