{"id":12621,"date":"2026-05-18T12:21:46","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T10:21:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/c2dh-en\/?post_type=events&#038;p=12621"},"modified":"2026-05-18T12:54:06","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T10:54:06","slug":"democracy-at-risk","status":"publish","type":"events","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/c2dh-en\/events\/democracy-at-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"Democracy at Risk: January 8, 2023, in Brazil and the Use of Computer Vision in Public Records"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"lecture-by-cassia-takahashi-hosni\"\n    >\nLecture by C\u00e1ssia Takahashi Hosni<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 8, 2023, supporters of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, rejecting the recent inauguration of President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva, stormed and vandalized the Planalto Palace, the National Congress, and the Supreme Federal Court in Bras\u00edlia, in an attack aimed at undermining democratic institutions and contesting the transfer of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later that year, by order of the Supreme Federal Court, the Institutional Security Cabinet (GSI) released footage of the attempted coup recorded by the 33 surveillance cameras of the Planalto Palace. Drawing on this public archive, in 2024 the FAPESP-funded project Digital Archives and Research, coordinated by artist and researcher Giselle Beiguelman, developed a digital interface that uses computer vision to process more than 500 hours of video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The platform enables users to navigate the footage by time, space, and objects, opening new ways to understand the events of January 8 \u2014 from the architecture of Brazil\u2019s seat of government to the gestures, movements, and behavior of the insurrectionists. More than a technical tool for organizing images, the interface acts as a mediator in the construction of public memory. Its algorithmic modeling and use of artificial intelligence do not merely classify or make the records accessible; they also shape the possible connections, interpretations, and narratives that may emerge from these public and political images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>C\u00e1ssia Hosni <\/strong>is Postdoc Visiting Fellow at the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C\u00b2DH) \u2013 Universit\u00e9 du Luxembourg and has a Postdoc Fellowship at the Museum of Contemporary Art, University of S\u00e3o Paulo (MAC-USP). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This research was financed by the S\u00e3o Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), Brazil.
